The so-called 'Great War' of 1789-1815, the era of the French Revolution, Nelson and Napoleon, was perhaps one of the most important periods in the history of Europe. It is also one of the most enduringly popular periods of history, and the subject for my latest project.

This will take the form of a hypertext system, which will include all the resources any normal could possibly want, and more than sufficient to make a very detailed study of the period. A few examples include:

Alison's History of Europe, which covers the period of the French Revolution, from the so-called Convocation of the States-General in 1789 to the restoration of the monarchy in 1815. This monumental work takes up twenty volumes on my bookshelf, and, though published in 1848, is probably the best of its kind available today. This will form the base of the package, containing, as it does, all the most important information. The text will be split up into time periods to make it more readable, and will be produced by using an OCR package on scans of the text. This promises to be a very tedious job. Oh well...

The Alison is, though a worthy tome, rather long! I am, therefore, going to include a similar, though shorter history by Morse-Stephens. This is only one volume, and is an excellent introduction to the period in question.

I am primarily a naval historian, and so I have no intention of passing up the opportunity of including a large amount of material relating to the man who was probably the greatest Admiral the world has ever known - Horatio Nelson. I intend to use Robert Southey's Life of Nelson, which is, though old, still one of the best around. It is a captivating account of the career of one of the most fascinating figures of all time. I will also include a brief biographical sketch of him of my own, for those who would like a more consice introduction to Nelson, though I cannot pretend that I am another Southey, nor anything like.

Still on the subject of Nelson, I intend to include his dispatches, which compromise one of the most fascinating insights into his character available, telling as they do the story of the lif of one of the most famous figures in British history.

I have not, unfortunately, such a large collection of material and/or knowledge of military history and the careers of Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington, and Napoleon. I will, however, endevour to find some suitable biographies and other source material. I do, however, have a large amount of material relating to the Battle of Waterloo which I can and will include.

Reverting to the Navy, I plan to include a detailed account (illustrated with large numbers of images from my substantial collection) of Nelson's Navy - the ships, the battles and the men who manned them, from the tyrannical Captain Pigot, against whom the crew of H.M.S. Hermione mutinied, in one of the most unsavory chapters in the history of the British Navy, to Nelson, the 'immortal memory'.

It is possible that this will be placed on the same CD-ROM as Welome to the Ancient World, or in some other form. In any case, it will probably be distributed by APDL, in the same way as my other productions. I can also promise that, like my other productions, its aim is to be the best of its kind for not just Acorn computers, but for any platform, and I am sure that, in this case, it will achieve that aim.
