The Earth in Space CD ROM consists of all the astronomy related
material anyone is ever likely to need, and a whole lot more besides. The
information is stored in three forms - databases, images and movies. The
databases contain exhaustive material on the planets, moons, main manned and
unmanned space missions, comets, asteroids, constellations and the brightest
stars. The images, which range from the planets and moons of the Solar System
to objects millions of light years away, nebulae, globular clusters, a wealth
of images of space missions and stations, in fact, well-nigh anything and
everything astronomical. They often include a caption from NASA. The movies
are either FLIs, MPEGs or Acorn Replay. Subjects vary from rotating
celestial bodies through a 'flight' through the Orion nebula to the Shuttle
launch. All software for accessing the databases and playing the movies is
provided. Also included, though not strictly part of the package, is a
wealth of Star Trek related text files, including two short novels,
images, and the Next Generation intro sequence in Replay format. In all, the
package compromises nearly 100Mb of data (which looks set to, perhaps, double in
the near future by the addition of maybe a hundred 'movies' and animations,
compromising NASA MPEGs, FLI animations and Acorn Replay files) and is, to the
best of my knowledge, the most extensive of its kind available for Acorn computers.
It is available from APDL , price 9-90.
