Proxy:

A proxy is a method of handling remote data transfer across the Web. If a Server is instructed by a Client to download a particular Web page which is not on the local drive, the Server will emulate the actions of a Client to communicate with the Server on the machine which does have the file to download the file. Such Client emulation is known as proxying.
Although most proxying goes on at Internet Service Providers, locally networked machines may send page requests to a Server on the network control machine, the only one connected to the Web, which proxies to the Internet Service Provider.
