Editorial - QFN 23 - Spring '97
==============================================================

Welcome to issue 23 of the newsletter, the eigth to appear
as a fully multi-tasking application on the Acorn platform.
(QFN is also available on paper). Text and graphics files
can also be supplied to PC and Mac owners, so if you know
any fans with these machines, then please pass on the info.
Thanks. See deatils below.

I have been holding off publishing this issue for a number
of reasons.

Firstly I was hoping to include details of Brian's and
Roger's next solo albums and had also intended listing tour
dates, but nothing has been announced yet, so this will have
to wait until the next issue.

Secondly there hasn't been too much happening in the
Queen-world recently, and this has resulted in there not
being too much real news to report. Including old articles
and transcriptions is one thing but I don't want them to
take over.

Its also worth mentioning that I had hoped to review the
books relating to the computer game 'Queen - The Eye'. I
have had them on order for some time now buy they still
aren't available at the time of writing. There are three
books, the novel, the artwork, and the making of.

Recently I have obtained an Internet account to put up QFN
web pages.

The web pages are not an online version of the magazine (I
haven't got that far yet!), but a collection of pages
'about' QFN and how to subscribe and get back issues etc of
the paper / disc versions. Consequently this is taking up a
lot of time; plus I have been visiting all the Queen-related
sites around the world, and beleive me there are quite a few
large sites (255 in total so far).

Information which can be found at these sites include:
Smile/Queen/Solo history, album/singles/video discographies,
Queen's entire catalogue of lyrics (and that is a big site
as you can imagine), various scans of album/single/video
covers (artwork), and last but by no means least a selection
of video/audio clips. This last item seem a little pointless
to me as sound files are always BIG, and for waiting 5
minutes for a 30 second clip to be downloaded, only to
discover the quality is worst than a a piece of vynil which
has been used as a frisbee, is not a happy one.

I am currently looking for sponsors for the QFN web site, so
if anyone would like to sponsor the site, then please
contact me, and you can have a page (or 2) at the QFN site -
this can be used by you for either a professional or
personal reason, and doesn't have to be Queen-related. You
don't need to be on the Internet to take advantage of this
offer. Thanks in advance for your help.

Contributions from fans for the QFN Bootleg book seem to be
fizzling out, with the exception of a few dedicated fans -
Jon James can not go unmentioned as he has been responsible
for at least 25% of the submissions - thanks John.

Strangly I did have one unexpected comment from a fan who
couldn't understand why anyone would possibly want a book
about unofficial Queen live recordings; and I know this fan
to be a big collector.

Anyway, that was just one insignificant voice in a large
crowd of shouting fans, so don't worry it hasn't put me off
producing the book. In fact I am just beginning to put some
bootleg pages together for the QFN site, so if you have
access have a look and let me know what you think.

Future versions of the disc version of QFN will be HTML
pages (just like on the Internet), so get your web
browsers,at the ready. May 1997

Anyway on with the mag...

More details about QFN
----------------------
As QFN is also provided to PC and Mac users in a text and
graphic file format (without any custom software) the layout
of the example format for the book, may be incorrectly
displayed on these amachines. So, if you are a PC or Mac user
and seriously wish to contribute please telephone QFN on
(+44 UK) 01772 556117 and request the printed 'layout form'
for your convienince. It will be mailed to you as soon as
possible.

Or

Look inside the MISC directory for the 'Example' and
'Layout' files in the Bootleg directory for a completed
example file and a blank version for you to copy and
complete. (Then send to QFN of course!)

I hope YOU can contribute to this book. It is going to be a
long project in the making and not something that I can do
without lots of help from other fans. It will not be rushed,
and appear overnight, so please be patient. It will however,
be worth the wait.

SUBSCRIPTION DETAILS
-------------------
If you would like to subscribe and get regular issues of
this newsletter, (Winter/Spring/Summer/Autumn), see the
information at the end of this file for details.

I would like to encourage any reader to contribute in
whatever form - articles/illustrations etc, and to submit
something for possible inclusion, as QFN is YOUR magazine.
As the name suggest, it's a magazine for fans of Queen and
about those fans, as well as containing news about the
greatest band ever - Queen! So make an effort - no matter
how small and you may well see your work recognised and
published in the premier Queen fan publication - QFN.

"Thank You" if you bought this issue of 'QFN'. I hope you
enjoy it and want to subscribe (if you haven't already!) If
you obtained this issue from a PD library then 3 months
sholud have elsapsed since the cover date, which allows QFN
to be distributed as PD. If this is not the case, then
maybe you'd like to tell me how you did get hold of it!? All
replies treated in confidence.

And finally... One very important thing before I forget -
please, please, please remember when subscribing to QFN to
make cheques payable to D.PARR and not QFN. My bank will not
accept cheques to QFN, and it costs me a small fortune in
postage/etc returning cheques which have the wrong payee on
them. Thanks.

If you've bought either a single issue or got this release
as PD after the cover date, and want to subscribe to get QFN
as soon as it's released, do the following.

1. Click the middle mouse button over the QFN 'crown' logo
(the crown on the icon bar).

2. Move the pointer up & right over the word 'subscription'.

3. The current costs/etc will be displayed.

4. Depending where you live in the world will determine
the number of issue you receive for the cost.

5. Clicking the toggle icon (top right of the subscription
window) will display the QFN address and other
   information.

EXTRA
-----
You can of course subscribe for extra by doubling the fee.
All fees must be in multiples of 5, unless you send in a
Europcheque (Europe only), in which case you can pay for
extra issues on top of a normal subscription. Each extra
issue is 2. ie a European subscription is 5 for 3 issues,
but if you want to subscribe for 1 year and get all 4 issues
it's 2 extra. ie the total would be 7.

The only foreign currecncy I can accept is US dollar bills
(no checks). A yearly subscription for 4 issues in the US is
20 dollars.

For more information, especially payment for overseas
subscribers (who can get single issues by sending me PD) see
the 'Help' file inside the QFN application. (Hold down SHIFT
and double-click on the QFN icon in the Filer window - NOT
icon bar one. Or use menu over the 'QFN' icon in a filer).

Or read the application 'QFN Soft' which details all Queen
software available from the QFN address. 'QFN Soft' is
located inside the 'Misc' section of this application -
click 'Return To Main Menu' on the 'Contents' page to see
the Misc icon, (once in the application).

All back issues of QFN are now PD, and APDL, The DataFile
and 'The Arm Club' have all back issues and demos of all QFN
Software, but it may cost you the same to get a demo as it
would to get the full version current version direct from
the QFN address.

PD EXCEPTION
------------
QFN (this newsletter and subsequent releases) will only
become PD three months after the cover/issue date. To locate
the date of this or other any release, click menu over the
'Contents' page and move across to the 'Info' section.
The issue number and cover date are at the bottom.

Issues 16 onwards (with the exception of this current issues
) are now PD, and available from PD Libraries, BBSs, or
direct from QFN. See the help file for details of how to get
back issues.

Well that's about it if you've read this far, so on with
the mag...

* Click on one of the arrows to the right of this window to
  read the next section.

* OR, click the 'Contents' logo (above the arrows) to go to
that section, then choose a section of the mag from there.
