=====================

First of all "thank you very much" to the fans who have
sumbitted something for the QFN Bootleg Book.

The current provisioanl title is:

'Queen - The Unofficial Recordings / A Collectors Handbook'

Yes, a mouthful I know. If you can think of an alternative
which describes the contents I'll be happy to hear from you.

Or maybe it should be simple like...

'Queen - The Bootlegs'

I would like more fans to send in reviews, and be involved,
so if a free copy of the completed book appeals to you as a
reward, send in something today.

Below are reviews sent in by QFN readers. If you'd like to
send in reviews, please keep to the format as below. There
is more information about submitting reviews at the end of
this file.

Review:
A Dutch CD limited to 25 copies. the disc itself has a white
label stuck on, with the title and a copy number.

The cover features a copy of the original Japanese vinyl
'Free In The Park' (ZAP 7960).

This CD is taken from a bootleg copy of the video and so the
quality on the whole is excellent (on a couple of occassions
the sound quality drops or is slow due to the video source).

The show is brilliant, as most fans will know if they have
seen the video possibly at the Convention where it is a
popular regular feature. It was the last date on the tour
playing to their 'home' crowd, and the songs had been honed
to perfection.

As usual the Medley starts with 'Youre My Best Friend'. The
classic 'Flick Of The Wrist' has a great introduction from
Brian about Freddie writing it in one of his viscious
moments. Then on to an outstanding version of 'The Prophet's
Song'.

Also featured is one of the earliest outings for 'You Take
My Breath Away' from ' A Day At The Races' (released 3
months later).

Unfortunately the last track fades before it ends, but
otherwise this is a wonderful CD and worth having if you can
get hold of a copy!

Review:
An early Japanese concert, and at 73 minutes long it
features most of the songs played. The sound quality isn't
the best - an audience recording taken from the middle of
the hall (?) Still very enjoyable once you've adjusted to
it.

Great vocals from Freddie, and Roger's high-pitched backing
vocals are amazing. Superb guitar work from Brian,
especially the opening of 'Ogre Battle', and the blistering
'Keep Yourself Alive'. Roger's drumming on 'Stone Cold
crazy' sounds like a machine gun firing around the hall!

A great one-sided cover insert shows Freddie bare-chested
with Brian slightly out of focus in the background. The rear
cover has a different picture of Freddie plus John with his
back to the audience, along with a track-listing.

An excellent package, but bieng Japanese it is very limited.

Review:
A 1995/96) Italian release featuring the Larry Lurex single,
5 of the 6 Smile tracks (Doin' Alright is absent) and the
Queen track 'Mad The Swine'.

This 10" picture disc has black and white photographs and
comes with a one-sided insert with the history of the tracks
and a photo of Freddie. The history alone is interesting.
The odd spelling mistake adds to the feel of the piece -
especially the section on the Larry Lurex single (true or
not).

The tracks will be familar to most Queen fans, but for those
of you who don't know, here goes; the first 2 were released
as a single by Freddie in 1973 under the name Larry Lurex.
Mad The Swine was originally intended to go on the first
album, but only saw the light of day recently on the b-sdie
of the 12" version of Headlong. The remaining tracks are by
the pre-Queen group Smile which were Brian, Roger and
singer/bassits Tim Stafell.

As usual for Italian releases there is also a small insert
with song titles, credits and timing. The attractiveness of
this release is that it's a picture disc with inserts. Also
available on CD.

Does anyone know the significance of the title of this release?

Review:
This is a rare show, and follows the standard format of the
'Magic Tour'. The only thing slightly different is a very
short burst of 'Keep Yourself Alive'. The 'Here We Go' is
not really a song, just a chant with Freddie joining in for
a couple of occassions.

Unless you are a completist, stick to 'Reigns The World',
'Done Under Pressure' bootlegs, or the official 'Live At
Wembley' release.

The cover is rather poor quality. A one-sided insert. The
rear cover features 21 supposed titles such as 'One Flash Of
Light', or 'I'm Just A Piece Loving Guy', obvious lines from
Queen songs, giving clues to the real contents of the CD.

A Japanese Fan Club release limited to 30 copies, with each
copy numbered on the rear sleeve.

Review:
An ultra-rare CD from Japan. Two-sided inlay, with the front
in colour, and two-sided rear cover - in colour with
track-listing and two small live photographs.

The rear cover states this show was recorded at the Uris
Theatre in 1974, however it matches a track-listing for
Oxford New Theatre in 1973 already available on audio tape.
Also, some of the songs here were not played at the Uris
Theatre - Jailhouse Rock was not included for instance. A
final piece of evidence is that there is an even rarer
Japanese metal acetate featuring the same track-listing for
Oxford. (See Andreas Voight's exellent book, 'Illegal
Queen').

The soundcheck is already available on the CD Ultimate
Rarities Collection and it is interesting to hear the group
discusssing sound levels etc.

The sound quality is not brilliant - some whining occurs in
Hangman, but this is 1973 and perhaps the tape has
deteriorated with time. This show is one of the earliest
Queen shows available, and is possibly the full show. As
support to Mott The Hoople, they probably had a maximum of
45 minutes playing time and you almost get that.

Nice intro on Procession and Father To Son, a brilliant and
longer intro by Brian on Ogre Battle, and after Hangman the
sound quality improves showing the full depth and power of
early Queen on Keep Yourself Alive (some superb driving
power chords from Brian, and Roger's drums are audiable in
the background, plus of course the backing vocals). A
wonderful Liar, again with blistering chords and more
powerful drumming follows.

Freddie tells everyone they will have to stand for the next
one - Jailhouse Rock. They even have time for a furious Bama
Lama before they leave the stage!

The sound may not be brilliant, but put your headphones on
and let yourself drift back to the time Queen set out to
take on the world... and won! An Historical document.

Do You Want A Queen Bootleg Book?
---------------------------------
If you've enjoyed reading this bootleg section then you'd
like the QFN bootleg book due for publication in the near
future. Maybe you can supply some details and reviews. It
means a free copy when the book is published.

In my opinion, the more fans who are involved the better, as
I would guess the book would then contain a broader outlook,
(frm the point of the reviews) rather than just being from a
few fans' points of view, which could be seen as a boring
list by two or three fans. I don't want an elitist book, but
one which many fans can relate to - expert and novice
collector.

Consequently, I need more reviews if this project is going
to succeed. It would be a mistake to assume I have been sent
all I need, as I haven't received even a quarter of what I
want to include in the final thing. So please help.

Please don't think that someone else will already have sent
in a review of a recording which you have, as so far I have
received only a few duplicate reviews. Even when two or more
fans review the same recording, there are differences in the
details / comments, which is good for cross-referencing etc.

So, if you promised to send something when I originally
requested it, but didn't, please reconsider and begin
something now. Now, now, now, now! Just put on a bootleg
whilst you read this newsletter. Then you'll be in the mood
to send me review.

Many initial letters about the book were enthusiastic, but
not many of those fans actually sent in reviews, which is
very frustrating and disappointing for me as I know some of
those fans have large and interesting collections not yet
covered by the book.

I don't want to be pushy about it, but if you promised
something please send in at least a few submissions - it
will mean a complimentary copy of the printed book for you
when it's published. Hopefully in gloriuos colour!

Begin with three or four reviews and you'll soon see how
rewarding it can be. It doesn't take up too much time
either, and you'll be surprised at how good some recordings
sound having not heard them for a while.

If possible, please send reviews on the QFN pre-printed
sheet (obtainable directly from QFN), or on floppy computer
disc, (as the file named LAYOUT in the MISC directory of
this very disc).

If you don't have a copy of the paper version which you'd
prefer to complete, then please request it by phoning 01772
556117 and I will mail it to you as soon as possible.

I do want reviews of vinyl releases, as much of what I have
to date concentrates on recent CDs (from 1990 onwards,
mainly). Although these CDs themselves cover all periods of
Queen's career, and are sometimes bootlegs of earlier
recordings from vinyl, but this time around on a different
label. I don't have all the CD reviews needed, so do
continue to send CD reviews as well as vinyl too.

I will be including some details about tapes, but not the
type your mate did you, but the type which have printed
covers and even sometimes cases.

These tapes are usually considered less valuable than CD or
vinyl because the media is easily destroyed and lost,
although this leads to a type of rarity in itself.

Bootleg audio cassettes can usually be bought much cheaper
too.

On second thoughts maybe you should tell me of any audio
tapes you have, as I may not get a review of some releases
which are available on CD or vinyl which you have taped
copies of.

So, look at your collection and tell me what you have. Any
lists (preferably supplied on disc) welcome. Draw my
attention to anything very rare or unusual if you are aware
of it. Thanks.

Don't forget, as well as listing the details such as Title,
Catalogue Number, Venue and Date etc, I also require your
personal comments about the release as a whole.

Remember it will be your reviews which make the book come
alive for the reader, rather being seen as just a factual
list. Details such as rarities performed (live or studio),
or if the recording isn't actually what the packaging says
it is. (which is quite common). These things are useful for
identification reasons. The more detail the better, as I can
always edit out anything not needed for the final draft. So,
put in as much as you like and describe releases as fully as
possible, mis-spelling, picture disc, anything you know
about the release. It will be a huge help.

Finally, although the following is not essential, I would
like to request that all reviews are accompanied by a
high-quality photocopy of any LP sleeves (back / front /
inside), preferably reproduced on a colour copier and
reduced to the size of a normal CD cover - as this is the
size I envisage using for the final thing. This will mean
that no extra reduction will be needed from artwork supplied
by you, which would result in further deterioration quality-
wise if copied and reduced. Send a normal copy if you aren't
sure.

OR

Take a CD case to your local 'copy shop' and ask for the
final copy to fit inside the CD case - it's easily done on
the advanced colour copiers of today and I want the
illustrations to look good and consistant.

I realise that a 12" vinyl will not fit onto an A3 size page
(colour copies maximum size), and a little at the top and
bottom of the cover will be missed off. This is acceptable.

Ideally I would like to be able to actually photograph the
original covers of recordings, but I realise that not
everyone will want to trust them to the postal service. If
you do send originals to QFN through the post, be sure to
send them well packed and by registered/recorded delivery
for insurance purposes. Also include stiff card inside the
envelope so your covers won't be folded. Don't send CDs!

CD covers should be copied at actual size (back / front /
inside / etc.) and also on a colour copier.

Any copying costs above 5 can be refunded by QFN, but
please inform me how many you intend doing, and of which
releases, so I can check if I already have copies of the
cover you intend sending, as I may already have a copy
concerned sent in by someone else. In this case just send
your review for comparision and I can combine two or more
reviews is neccessary.
