I has come to my attention that some of us Queenies are in awe
of the brilliance of the music press, with their well informed
and generous reviews of the undeserving album Made in Heaven.
So for those of us who aspire to these journalistic heights I
have come up with a few golden rules, enough to get us steady
work as NME staff writers despite our rather poor taste in
music...

(1) You must mention that Heaven for Everyone was a Cross
single, but that all the other songs are new. Remember
that this is the proof of your good faith: you may be
Queen-phobic but you did your research...

(2) You must mention that Brian May is a crap guitarist,
comparing to him a poodle as you do so. Its a shame
he got his hands on the mixing desk, because...

(3) ...although you think all other Queen albums are
overblown tosh, this one is "poignant" and "honest".
Extra points are offered if you give Freddie due
    praise for bravely writing TMLWKY...

(4) It cannot be overstated that you MUST award three
stars out of five. Two stars would make you seem
ungenerous and cynical in the face of all that
honest emotion, but four might suggest that you
actually *like* Queen and are not some self-
satisfied smug trendy. Remember as you do this
that you are being very charitable, and feel
free to pat yourself on the back...

God... What an incredible track... Let me live.

Why the hell have they kept Roger chained to his drum set for
the last 15 years?

As far as I know, he stopped doing lead vocals for Queen back
in the seventies. He's brilliant!

Freddie was incredible... but Roger was better. Just the fact
that his gravelly voice had been forced into that melodious,
clean-cut song was such a contrast.

'And if you're ever in trouble,
You can always count on me...'

That bit was like a religious experience. 'O, ek voel so na aan
ons God'. That's Afrikaans.

However, I found Brian's ending was a bit of an anti-climax. He
sings perfectly, and technically better than Roger... but he
doesn't have the same STRENGTH or CONFIDENCE... or something
like that.

I must admit I was sceptical *before* Made in Heaven came out -
would the appearance of these B sides and cover versions spoil
the impact of Innuendo as "last album"? Im glad to say I was
totally wrong as wrong could ever be, as MIH is possibly the
best Queen album ever. "Innuendo" was spoilt for me by one or
two dud songs (including the over-rated title track), but MIH
works perfectly as a sort of semi-concept album with a Queen-
worthy twist in the tail (tale?). Here is my old farthing's
worth of feelings then...

 1) this album is subtle in having mainstream appeal whilst
including special references for Queen fans ... to know
where all the tracks and samples came from is to feel
that you are in the "royal family"...

 2) is it just me, or does some of Brian's guitar here
sound (Pink) Floydian? I am thinking in particular
of Mother Love and My Life Has Been Saved, and of
Roger Waters Floyd circa The Wall?

 3) on My Life Has Been Saved (again), does anyone know
if this is meant to be serious or ironic (or both)?
I don't ask this in terms of Freddie's bodily life,
but rather in terms of the spiritual overtones. I
think it could mean at least three things...

     a) there is spiritual hope in the worst times of
our lives (consistent with the rest of the
        album...)
     b) things are so bad we should be thankful for
small mercies (as in Thank God It's Xmas?)
     c) an ironic twist on how some preaching can
sound hollow when suffering continues in
the "real world". (sort of Pet Shop Boys
esque, if you don't mind my language)

 4) It might be just me again, but A Winter's Tale
reminds me of a song that I can't quite put my
    finger on. Any clues?

This is exactly how I interpreted the song the first time on the radio. I
assumed that it was by and about Freddie, and I found it _very_ moving
indeed. I was sitting in my car at the Burger King drive-though, and wound
up practically howling into my whopper with cheese...

Here is my reaction on his review:

>I got my copy of Made In Heaven on friday (yes, friday), and here's my
>first thoughts of it: I LOVE IT!

I agree completely, I LOVE IT! In Holland it should have been released
on monday 6th, but my local CD shop sold it yesterday (saturday)
already.

>1. It's A Beautiful Day -- very strong and powerful, emotional song - this
>one I like very very much.
It's a good start for a great album.

>2. Made In Heaven -- this is just what you'd expect, Freddie's song
>heavily 'remixed' to make a Queen version. It's fine, but I'm not yet sure
>whether I like this better than the original.
Not knowing the original, I really like it.

>3. Let Me Live -- a happy gospel-type tune, which has four other people on
>background vocals. Features Freddie, but also Roger and Brian on lead
>vocals. Reminds me of All God's People, but this has a jollier feel.
I really like the way Roger and Brian sing parts of the song.

>4. Mother Love -- touching, so touching. Freddie's voice has been put
>really in front, and he sings about waiting for death. Brian sings the
>last verse. Right in the end there's excerpts from Live At Wembley and
>Larry Lurex song 'Goin' Back'. Song ends wi th the sound of a crying baby.
>This, I think, is the top of the album.
It IS the best of the album!! Especially the end of the song, with the
live exerpts is touching. It brings me right back to 1986, when I had
the privilige to be at their last "Magic" tour.

>5. My Life Has Been Saved -- nice song too, from the days of The Miracle.
Agreed.

>6. I Was Born To Love You -- this is even more heavily remixed than Made
>In Heaven. The order of the verses is little different. Very good indeed.
Again a song I haven't heard for a long time. I don't have the "Mr Bad
Guy" album. I think it will rate 2nd on my personal list.

>7. Heaven For Everyone -- though chosen to be single, I don't think this is
>the best track of the album. Near the top anyway, great tune.
This track I *do* know. I think the "The Cross" version which has
Freddie's *and* Roger's vocals is better. But still a great song.

>8. Too Much Love Will Kill You -- Freddie sings this in a pretty much
>different way. Some may like it better, some not. I personally think Brian's
>original is slightly better. Not bad anyway (there's no bad tracks on this
>album).
I agree with you, Brian's version on BTTL is better.

>9. You Don't Fool Me -- Probably Roger's lyrics, music could be John's (just
>my guesses). This is very nice song, rolls on with soft, catchy melody. Sounds
>very Deacon-like.
Nice song, not instantly recognizable as a Queen song, but after a few
seconds... Yes, really nice.

>10. A Winter's Tale -- someone said this was the last vocal recording from
>Freddie, and for me it sounds like it. Freddie's voice is pretty thin compared
>to the other tracks. The lyrics talk about the winter-fall, about how beauti-
>ful and dream-like the world seems. Not a top of this album, but you know,
>I like them all. :)
Maybe not THE top of the album, but it is one of the better songs.

>11. It's A Beautiful Day (reprise) -- slightly rockier return to the great
>opening track.
It's really a great ending. Not just because it's "slightly rockier"
but also because at the end you hear fragments of other "old" Queen
songs.

>Now here comes the strange part. At least my CD player recognises 13 tracks
>instead of 11 as stated on disc's cover. Number 12 is actually the end of
>number 11. It lasts only about 5 seconds, and the only vocals are "Yeah".

>The slow, quiet and lasting synth sounds take more than 20 minutes in total!
>Do your CDs have these tracks 12 and 13 too? Just wondering...
Yes it's the same with mine. At first I thought I missed the number 12
song. The 13th number is really strange.

>All in all, I'm very satisfied with MIH. I really think it's one of the best

>7. Heaven For Everyone -- though chosen to be single, I don't think this is
>the best track of the album. Near the top anyway, great tune.

Well to the mass public, this is definitely the best. Sounds alot like "These are the days
of
our life" Both are soft ballets. But the chorus on HFE is heavier, especially the second
oone,
with Freddie doing the backing.

>8. Too Much Love Will Kill You -- Freddie sings this in a pretty much

Agree, Brian's version is much more sorrow and emotional.

 Hi, Gero...

: As I started to listen to "Made In Heaven" on the 2nd, I (of course)
: found songs I liked better than the others. So let me try to get an
: order into the 11 songs (let's forget about this tremendous track 13
: for a while):
: So, what's your opinion towards this?
Oh goodie, a chart thread!! I think *my* order would have to be...
     1 ... Let Me Live
     2 ... Mother Love
     3 ... Made In Heaven
4 ... I Was Born to Love You
     5 ... A Winter's Tale
     6 ... Heaven For Everyone
     7 ... Its a Beautiful Day
     8 ... Its a Beautiful Day (Reprise)
9 ... My Life has Been Saved
10 ... Too Much Love Will Kill You
    11 ... You Don't Fool Me

If Brian's TMLWKY was here, I would put it at about number four.
Freddie's version isn't so good IMHO, but its still a fine song
nonetheless. Also, You Don't Fool Me would rate higher on other
Queen albums as the quality of MIH is special. Maybe we should
do a league or something, with ten points for number one, nine
for number two etc?

Best,

Tanita

I agree that Let Me Live is the best song on the album-- I just can't get
it out of my head (although I agree with Q magazine that it owes a lot to
Take A Little Piece Of My Heart).
I don't like It's a Beautiful Day very much, though. It seems like it
wasn't completed properly by Freddie, hence the fade out.
Unlike everyone else on this newsgroup, it seems, I actually prefer
Freddie's version of TMLWKY: Brian's voice is just too thin. If you don't
believe me, watch the Tribute concert again!
Does anyone know why track 12 is just "Yeah"?

Thank you my lovelies!
>Did anyone notice the release of Made in heaven on white vinyl.
>
>Just bought it yesterday. The album doesn't contain track 12 and 13 of the CD.
>But it is delivered with 3 posters which each show Freddie with John, Brian
and Roger.
I love the new album -- but, I was totally unaware that many of these
songs were not, in fact, new ones. TMLWKY is a _very_ powerful song...
most people have said that Brian's 1992 version is far superior.
I have never seen their solo works in CD stores...just how hard are these
to find in the US?
As I was listening to MIH for the first time, when the final track came
on, I was wondering just how long it would last, since I had not noted
the total track time when I first put the CD in. At around 8 minutes,
I thought, "wow, it _has_ to be ending soon..." I kept on thinking
that and then noticed that it was approaching the 20-minute mark...I think
it ended up somewhere around 23 minutes...very cool, and very mysterious.
What is the last word on the album? It sounds like Freddie, but I wasn't
sure...

My favourite band is Queen. They are probably the most diverse and capable
bunch of musicians ever to become rock stars. Their music has an incredible
variety of influences, from 19th Century Opera, through 1920's Jazz, to
modern funk and thrash metal. What is most surprising is that Queen manage
to pull it off.

Though the band Queen still exists, the death of Freddie Merury has
terminated the writing of new material by Queen. The other members of the
band, Roger Taylor, Brian May and John Deacon, have been working on material
recorded by Freddie before his death, for release around Christmas 1995.
Brian May and Roger Taylor have also released solo albums.

This album is going to be released on November 6th (North America is Nov.
7th according to latest Hollywood Records info). A German pay-tv station
called "Premiere" broadcasted a show called "Das Queen-Ph nomen" (in
alt.music.queen also known as "The Queen Phenomena"). It gave us a taste of
what is going to be in this album.

The following sound bits are taking from this tv show. All samples have been
recorded and edited with CoolEdit using the 8 bit-ADC of an Ensoniq
Soundscape soundcard on a Windows PC.

Note: All the 22 khz versions have been deleted due to a restriction on my
                     site (sysadmin order) Sorry folks!!

Please don't use the sounds for commercial purposes!

To download the soundfiles, you might have to select a certain menu item of
your WWW browser. In the Windows version of Netscape you can simply use
WinZIP as helper application for .ZIP-files and the MediaPlayer to actually
play the soundfiles from within WinZIP.

For those of us that have not seen "The Queen Phenomena", then the loading
down of the files in Gero Zahn's site in Germany has been great.
Unfortunately the files are meant for a PC, but with a bit of searching I
found a great shareware program on the Internet that will deal with .WAV
files for Macintosh. The sound is great and there is no difference compared
to the sound from a PC. The program can be found at:

ftp://ftp.utexas.edu/pub/mac/sound/

and is called SoundApp-151. Just download it, let it be unpacked by say
Unstuffit Expander and you are away. The sound files will have to be
unzipped by Unzip, but that can also be found out there somewhere.

[Image] Heaven For Everyone

This will be the first single (in Europe) and is going to be released in the
end of October. (The 23rd has been told to be the European release date.)

During the end credits of the tv show they played about 1'30" of this track.

11 kHz mono, ~687 KB - TCBH11.ZIP, containing TCBH11.WAV. About 1 MB
uncompressed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Image] Too Much Love Will Kill You

The track "Too Much Love Will Kill You" is already known by Brian May's
album "Back To The Light". He wrote it, and it has actually been recorded
for the "The Miracle" Queen album. But they decided not to use this
material, so there exists a version with Freddie's vocals on it. Apparently,
this will be the first single released by Hollywood Records in North
America.

There has been said much about AIDS when talking about this track. But it
does not have to do with this at all. It's about one man being in love with
two women at the same time, proably kind of biographic for Brian's life.

The sound bit contains a piece of the interview with Brian.

11 kHz mono, ~494 KB - TMLWKY11.ZIP, containing TMLWKY11.WAV. About 670 KB
uncompressed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Image] Mother Love

This song is played at the very beginning of the tv show when they turn back
the wheel of Queen history from Knebworth back to Smile (that's exactly the
meaning of the spoken text). Freddie's voice sounds rather narrow, so this
must be one of the last recordings before his death.

I'm sorry for the abrupt end of that sample, but it is like this on the
video.

11 kHz mono, ~429 KB - MOTHLV11.ZIP, containing MOTHLV11.WAV. About 541 KB
uncompressed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Image] A Winter's Tale

We have been informed (thanks, QueenFan39@aol.com) that this song is
entitled A Winter's Tale, and not Dreaming as we had ventured to guess. It
is another previously unknown Queen song recorded before Freddie's death,
which will be the second single of the new album (hopefully worldwide). The
translation of the spoken text: "How bad Freddie's physical condition went
on to be, his sense of music was bright like never before. And Queen didn't
just create their most personal album but probably the very best of their
entire career."

11 kHz mono, ~627 KB -DREAM11.ZIP, containing DREAM11.WAV. About 818 KB
uncompressed.

"Made In Heaven" and will be released on November 7 in North America. The
album has 11 tracks (not 10 as the press release indicated) and the first
North American single will be "Too Much Love Will Kill You", which should be

There are 13 tracks, number 12 is called "yeah" and is 1 second long, it
consists of Freddie? going "Yeah!" really loud. Basically it sounds like
part of the end of "Its a beautiful day" (like the "for everyone" at the end
of Heaven for Everyone) Track #13 is one I previously mentioned, it's a 22
minute background music track, very soft not really music at all. Odd bits
of vocals.

All CD's and tapes will have them but the Vinyl won't (another spoiler, the
Vinyl will all be coloured and limited to 25,000 after that there will be no
more available. Not sure of the colour though)
