=====================

First of all "thank you very much" to the fans who have
sumbitted something for the QFN Bootleg Book.

The current provisioanl tile is:

The Queen Catalogue Of Unofficial Releases & Rarities'.

Yes, a mouthful I know. If you can think of an alternative
which describes the contents I'll be happy to hear from you.

I would like more fans to send in reviews, and be involved,
so if a free copy of the completed book appeals to you as a
reward, send in something today.

Below are reviews sent in by QFN readers. If you'd like to
send in reviews, please keep to the format as below. There
is more information about submitting reviews at the end of
this file.

In the Lap of the Gods (Revisited)

A rare chance to hear live versions of some of Queens
early tracks. Five years later on, Freddie sounds a lot more
familiar with his audience, so this gives an engaging
insight into the greener Queen. The record is worth having
for its version of Lap of the Gods alone!

Son & Daughter Pt.2

Like many of Queen's live recordings, these tracks are
indistinguishable from studio quality. Freddie's vocal
performance is admirable throughout, but especially on
Father to Son.

Keep Yourself Alive
Liar
Son & Daughter

SIDE 2 - 1977
Spread Your Wings
It's Late
Melancholy Blues
We Will Rock You

The version of 'Liar' has a different feel and makes an
interesting listen. Brian and Roger really do their stuff at
the end of 'Son and Daughter'. 'It's Late' turns out to be a
really spaced out number. A really good play on the mixing
desk! This one ends with its real highlight in 'We Will Rock
You', first the slow version and then a superb fast
rendition.

Track Listing:

SIDE 2
Keep Yourself Alive
Seven Seas of Rhye
Modern Times Rock 'N' Roll
Liar

Excellent vocal performance from Freddie and backing from
the band, from during the release of Seven Seas of Rhye. A
best of selection from Queen and Queen II. There is an
amusing impromptu insert from Freddie in Ogre Battle. In
fact this performance sounds assuringly confident... a sort
of direct, and straight to the point concert.

Do You Want A Queen Bootleg Book?
---------------------------------
If you've enjoyed reading this bootleg section then you'd
like the QFN bootleg book due for publication in the near
future. Maybe you can supply some details and reviews. It
means a free copy when the book is published.

In my opinion, the more fans who are involved the better, as
I would guess the book would then contain a broader outlook,
(for the review section) rather than just being from a few
fans' points of view, and could be seen as a boring list by
two or three fans. I don't want an elitist book, but one
which many fans can relate to.

Consequently, I need more reviews if this project is going
to succeed. It would be a mistake to assume I have been sent
all I need, as I haven't received even a quarter of what I
want to include.

Please don't think that someone else will already have sent
in a review which you have, as so far I have received only a
few duplicate reviews. Even when two or more fans review the
same recording, there are still differences in the comments.
which is good for cross-referencing and confirmation.

So, if you promised to send something when I originally
requested it, but didn't, please reconsider and begin
something now. Now, now, now, now! Just put on a bootleg
whilst you read this newsletter. Then you'll be in the mood
to send me review.

Many initial letters about the book were enthusiastic, but
not many of those fans actually sent in reviews, which is
very frustrating and disappointing for me as I know some of
those fans have large and interesting collections not yet
covered by the book.

I don't want to be pushy about it, but if you promised
something please send in at least a few submissions - it
will mean a complimentary copy of the printed book for you
when it's published.

Begin with three or four reviews and you'll soon see how
rewarding it can be. It doesn't take up too much time
either, and you'll be surprised at how good some recordings
sound having not heard them for a while.

If possible, please send reviews on the QFN pre-printed
sheet (obtainable directly from QFN), or on floppy computer
disc, (as the file named LAYOUT in the MISC directory of
this very disc).

If you don't have a copy of the paper version which you'd
prefer to complete, then please request it by phoning 01772
556117 and I will mail it to you as soon as possible.

I especially want reviews of vinyl releases, as much of what
I have to date concentrates on recent CDs (from 1990
onwards, mainly). Although these CDs themselves cover all
periods of Queen's career, and are sometimes bootlegs of
earlier recordings from vinyl, but this time around on a
different label. I don't have all the CD reviews needed, so
do continue to send CD reviews as well as vinyl too.

I will be including some details about tapes, but not the
type your mate did you, but the type which have printed
covers and even sometimes cases.

These tapes are usually considered less valuable than CD or
vinyl because the media is easily destroyed and lost,
although this leads to a type of rarity in itself.

Bootleg audio cassettes can usually be bought much cheaper
too.

On second thoughts maybe you should tell me of any audio
tapes you have, as I may not get a review of some releases
which are available on CD or vinyl which you have taped
copies of.

So, look at your collection and tell me what you have. Any
lists (printed/on disc) welcome. Draw my attention to
anything very rare or unusual if you are aware of it.
Thanks.

Don't forget, as well as listing the details such as Title,
Catalogue Number, Venue and Date etc, I also require your
personal comments about the release as a whole.

Remember it will be your reviews which make the book come
alive for the reader, rather being seen as just a boring
list. Details such as rarities performed (live or studio),
or if the recording isn't actually what the packaging says
it is. (which is quire common). These things are useful for
identification reasons. The more detail the better, as I can
always edit out anything not needed for the final draft. So,
put in as much as you like and describe releases as fully as
possible, mis-spelling, picture disc, anything you know
about the release. It will be a huge help.

Finally, although the following is not essential, I would
like to request that all reviews are accompanied by a
high-quality photocopy of any LP sleeves (back / front /
inside), preferably reproduced on a colour copier and
reduced to the size of a normal CD cover - as this is the
size I envisage using for the final thing. This will mean
that no extra reduction will be needed from artwork supplied
by you, which would result in further deterioration quality-
wise if copied and reduced. Send a normal copy if you aren't
sure.

OR

Take a CD case to your local 'copy shop' and ask for the
final copy to fit inside the CD case - it's easily done on
the advanced colour copiers of today and I want the
illustrations to look good and consistant.

I realise that a 12" vinyl will not fit onto an A3 size page
(colour copies maximum size), and a little at the top and
bottom of the cover will be missed off. This is acceptable.

Ideally I would like to be able to actually photograph the
original covers of recordings, but I realise that not
everyone will want to trust them to the postal service. If
you do send originals to QFN through the post, be sure to
send them well packed and by registered/recorded delivery
for insurance purposes. Also include stiff card inside the
envelope so your covers won't be folded.

CD covers should be copied at actual size (back / front /
inside / etc.) and also on a colour copier.

Any copying costs above 5 can be refunded by QFN, but
please inform me how many you intend doing, and of which
releases so I can check if I already have copies of the
cover you intend sending, as I may already have a copy
concerned sent in by someone else. In this case just send
your review for comparision and I can combine two or more
reviews is neccessary.
