Q Magazine - December 1995

Obviously a lot of magazine around the world have mentioned
Queen because of 'Made In Heaven', and its single releases
though I can't, and there really is no need to mention them
all here. One review which can't go without notice appeared
in Q magazine. It was approached as Queen's new album,
rather than a final collection of song thrown together by a
band who's singer had died years earlier, which might have
been expected by the press. This is a new approach for a
music magazines who usually seemed to take delight in
condeming Queen as 'overproduced pomp' etc.

In places the Q review is positive and has an insight into
what Queen were about, but in the end it is just another
piece of bad rock jurnalism by someone who had to write
something for his pay check.

Although the review tried to be contsructive, and in parts
it was, it fell into the trap of not knowing much about the
band and made numerous errors about the songs and other
easily researched facts. The reviewer compares 'My Life Has
Been Saved' to a typical Cliff Richard song, and claims 'Too
Much Love Will Kill You' is a hideous song. This just goes
to prove that commercial magazine reviews should be taken
with a pinch of salt, and unless they are totally unbiased
and constructive in their critical analysis they become
pointless.

This issue also included the only full page advert for the
album which I am aware of. It contained the full landscape
scene from the album cover - of the the lake with all 4
figures, with the text 'Sometime You Need to Hear The Whole
Album' below it.

Record Collector December 1995

Here we have a monthly music magazine that take its content
very seriously and one I personally hardly ever miss buying.
The articles are usually very well research and written as
factually as possible.

This issue includes information about the the pocket-size
Freddie book from the 'They Died Too Young' series and
reproduces its cover.

The Jimi Hendrix tribute album, 'In From The Storm'
featuring Brian, has been produces as a piucture disc, and
the small snippit here contains details of many of the other
performers. (A 4 track Promo CD sampler from this album
features Brian's contribution 'One Rainy Wish').

On the 'Information Station' page (aimed at collectors of
promotional releases), Queen are featured twice in the top
ten list, with both the promo jukebox 7" vinyl version and
the promo CD of 'Heaven For Everyone'. Valued at 50 and 25
respectivley. The small jukebox tent card, and A4 poster are
illustrated and details are given about each release.

The second installment of Record Collector's 'Queen Before
Queen' article continues with Roger Taylor's first sreious
group, Reactio'. This brilliant 7 page article traces Roger
from his earliest days in Cornwall right up to 1968 when he
moved to London. The article includes 7 photographs and a
few tickets/posters from Reaction's concerts and illustrates
the 2 acetate labels of Roger's first ever recordings.

Rocord Collector - January 1996

As promised in last months 'Queen Before Queen' article,
this month sees Smile getting the in-depth treatment. The
article is 7 pages long and features photographs,
tickets/posters, record labels and lots of details you
probably didn't know. For instance did you know that Tim
Stafell made the alien model for Roger's solo album 'Fun In
Space'? The funny thing is, Tim didn't know what or who it
was at the time and only realised years after the album had
been released! There is also a discography with catalogue
numbers and current values etc.

Queen feature again on the 'Information Station' page as a
third promo for 'Heaven For Everyone' (35) is realised.
This CD is produced by Telstar and is a companion piece to
their 7" vinyl jukebox release mentioned in the December
issue of Record Collector.

A jukebox 7" exists for 'A Winter's Tale' (20) which like
'Heaven For Everyone' has an ink-free label, a jukebox tent
card and an A4 poster. Also mentioned is a two track DJs
promo of 'A Winter's Tale' which also includes 'Thank God
It's Christmas'.

Finally, for collectors is the first ever oficial limited
edition Queen phone card, produced by P&J Promotions. Each
card comes in its own numbered folder. The card shows the
gatefold album cover in full cover and cost 10 plus
postage. Record Collector claimed the edition is limited to
1000 cards whereas the official fan club say 5000. Phone
1273 463017 for availibilty and postage cost. Credit card
payments are welcomed.

Lastly in this months Record Collector is a letter regarding
a review of the book 'Queen - The Early Years'. J Hugh who
wrote the letter complains the reviewer mislead him; as when
he bought the book based upon the glowing review, it didn't
contain enough new material he had been led to beleive,
stating that most of it is in either 'As It Began' or 'Queen
and I - The Brian May Story'. Having read all three books, I
can't personally see why he was sos disappointed.
