The QFN Bootleg Book.
=====================

First of all "thank you very much" to the fans who have
sumbitted something for the QFN Bootleg Book.

The provisioanl tile is:

The Ultimate Queen Fans Reference Of Unofficial Releases'.

Yes, a mouthful I know. If you can think of an alternative
which describes the contents I'll be happy to hear from you.

I would have liked more fans to send in reviews, and be
involved, but if a free copy of the completed book doesn't
appeal as a reward, I'm not sure what would.

Below are reviews sent in by QFN readers. If you'd like to
send in reviews, please keep to the format as below. There is
more informatuon about submitting reviews at the end of this
file.

Review:
This CD is 57 minutes long and was recorded during the 1977
world tour. As you listen you can hear Brian thanking the
crowd from Seattle. I discovered the show is from the 13th
of March.

The sound quality is below avaerage, and the end of each
track is faded away, which spoils the atmosphere of the
show. Some good parts are when Freddie shouts out that he
wants to play the drus on '39. The medlay at the end is
good.

Review:
This show was recorded on the 'Crazy' tour in 1980 at the
Mecca in Milwaukee, and is a 67 minute CD. There are 20
tracks, the best parts are when Freddie askes the crowd if
they think he looks like Burt Reynolds with his new
moustache. When Brian tells the crowd that their new album
'The Game' has just gone to number one in the charts, they
go wild. Sound quality is good and tracks are printed on the
disc.

Review:
This double CD was recordedon the second night at the Milan
Sportspalace on 'The Works' Tour. This perfprmance starts
off with 'Tear It Up', and Blasts into 'Tie Your Mother
Down'. This show has all the classic hits and nearly all of
the songs from 'The Works' album. Freddie is on top form
chanting with the crowd. John gets a mention fpr writing
'Another One Bites The Dust'. The soubd quality is excelent.
On the second CD as bonus tarcks, is the full 'Live Aid'
set, and brings back all the memories.

Once again those executives of the record companies miss
out. The bootleggers put out what the fans actually want
rather than the rip-off remastered CD's and re-issue of
'Greatest Hits'!

Yet again the enterprising Royalty Music label cashes in by
releasing the deleted 'Mr Bad Guy' CD - (the UK version in
full, with 3 extended tracks) and the added bonus of 3 more
12" tracks.

Fans have been offering up to 100 for the original CD and
you would probably be extremely lucky to get it for around
50. Now's your chance.

The quality is excellent and features all those wonderful
songs that we know and love - unlike the dreadful 'Freddie
Mercury Album' (in my opinion!). Just listen to the
magnificent 'Mr Bad Guy', 'There Must Be More To Life Than
This' and the extended 'Made In Heaven'. Glorious!

The packaging features a copy of the original cover sleeve
with Special Edition and Extended version with extra tracks
on it, opening to a black & white shot of Freddie at Wembley
'86 and closing with track listing and Freddie at Montreux.
Remove the black & white picture CD of Lion and Unicorn
holding crown to see photo of Freddie's head and shoulders
from the same period as the cover photo. Rear cover is as
the original CD with the extra tracks added.

A superb package. The only thing is... why does the CD have
RMCD 005 as it's number, but the cover has RMCD 006?

____________________________________________________________

If you've enjoyed reading this bootleg section then you'd
like the QFN bootleg book due for publication in the near
future. Maybe you can supply some details and reviews. It
means a free copy when the book is published.

In my opinion, the more fans who are involved the better, as
I would guess the book would then contain a broader outlook,
(for the review section) rather than just being from a few
fans' points of view, and could be seen as a boring list by
two or three fans. I don't want an elitist book, but one
which many fans can relate to.

Consequently, I need more reviews if this project is going
to succeed. It would be a mistake to assume I have been sent
all I need, as I haven't received even a quarter of what I
want to include.

Please don't think that someone else will already have sent
in a review which you have, as so far I have received only a
few duplicate reviews. Even when two or more fans review the
same recording, there are still differences in the comments.
which is good for cross-referencing and confirmation.

So, if you promised to send something when I originally
requested it, but didn't, please reconsider and begin
something now. Now, now, now, now! Just put on a bootleg
whilst you read this newsletter. Then you'll be in the mood
to send me review.

Many initial letters about the book were enthusiastic, but
not many of those fans actually sent in reviews, which is
very frustrating and disappointing for me as I know some of
those fans have large and interesting collections not yet
covered by the book.

I don't want to be pushy about it, but if you promised
something please send in at least a few submissions - it
will mean a complimentary copy of the printed book for you
when it's published.

Begin with three or four reviews and you'll soon see how
rewarding it can be. It doesn't take up too much time
either, and you'll be surprised at how good some recordings
sound having not heard them for a while.

If possible, please send reviews on the QFN pre-printed
sheet (obtainable directly from QFN), or on floppy computer
disc, (as the file named LAYOUT in the MISC directory of
this very disc).

If you don't have a copy of the paper version which you'd
prefer to complete, then please request it by phoning 01772
556117 and I will mail it to you as soon as possible.

I especially want reviews of vinyl releases, as much of what
I have to date concentrates on recent CDs (from 1990
onwards, mainly). Although these CDs themselves cover all
periods of Queen's career, and are sometimes bootlegs of
earlier recordings from vinyl, but this time around on a
different label. I don't have all the CD reviews needed, so
do continue to send CD reviews as well as vinyl too.

I will be including some details about tapes, but not the
type your mate did you, but the type which have printed
covers and even sometimes cases.

These tapes are usually considered less valuable than CD or
vinyl because the media is easily destroyed and lost,
although this leads to a type of rarity in itself.

Bootleg audio cassettes can usually be bought much cheaper
too.

On second thoughts maybe you should tell me of any audio
tapes you have, as I may not get a review of some releases
which are available on CD or vinyl which you have taped
copies of.

So, look at your collection and tell me what you have. Any
lists (printed/on disc) welcome. Draw my attention to
anything very rare or unusual if you are aware of it.
Thanks.

Don't forget, as well as listing the details such as Title,
Catalogue Number, Venue and Date etc, I also require your
personal comments about the release as a whole.

Remember it will be your reviews which make the book come
alive for the reader, rather being seen as just a boring
list. Details such as rarities performed (live or studio),
or if the recording isn't actually what the packaging says
it is. (which is quire common). These things are useful for
identification reasons. The more detail the better, as I can
always edit out anything not needed for the final draft. So,
put in as much as you like and describe releases as fully as
possible, mis-spelling, picture disc, anything you know
about the release. It will be a huge help.

Finally, although the following is not essential, I would
like to request that all reviews are accompanied by a
high-quality photocopy of any LP sleeves (back / front /
inside), preferably reproduced on a colour copier and
reduced to the size of a normal CD cover - as this is the
size I envisage using for the final thing. This will mean
that no extra reduction will be needed from artwork supplied
by you, which would result in further deterioration quality-
wise if copied and reduced. Send a normal copy if you aren't
sure.

OR

Take a CD case to your local 'copy shop' and ask for the
final copy to fit inside the CD case - it's easily done on
the advanced colour copiers of today and I want the
illustrations to look good and consistant.

I realise that a 12" vinyl will not fit onto an A3 size page
(colour copies maximum size), and a little at the top and
bottom of the cover will be missed off. This is acceptable.

Ideally I would like to be able to actually photograph the
original covers of recordings, but I realise that not
everyone will want to trust them to the postal service. If
you do send originals to QFN through the post, be sure to
send them well packed and by registered/recorded delivery
for insurance purposes. Also include stiff card inside the
envelope so your covers won't be folded.

CD covers should be copied at actual size (back / front /
inside / etc.) and also on a colour copier.

Any copying costs above 5 can be refunded by QFN, but
please inform me how many you intend doing, and of which
releases so I can check if I already have copies of the
cover you intend sending, as I may already have a copy
concerned sent in by someone else. In this case just send
your review for comparision and I can combine two or more
reviews is neccessary.

RECORDABLE CDs!
===============
It's very interesting to note that Phillips are about to
launch the first ever domestic recordable CD machine. It
will sell for about 500. Blank recordable 'gold' CDs (the
type of master CDs need to put music on) will retail for
about 3. A bootleggers dream!

Apparently this move has been opposed by the BIG players
(major recording companies) in the music industry, as they
know it will not only dent their sales, but change the
market forever.

When Phillips sell their new machine, permanant digital
copies will become a reality. A copy will be possible, from
one digital source (the original CD) to another digital
source (the 'gold' blank CD). Any recordable digital machine
at a reasonable price will damage the future of music as
the major record companies

Whatever happens, as I say, it will change the market for
ever.

Special thanks so far to:
Jon James, Margaret Hopper, Darren Mundy, Peter Newman,
Emily Sheilds, Celia Newsham, Victoria Bollenswizc and Brian
Trubshaw for sending numerous reviews.
