The QFN Bootleg Book.
=====================

First of all "thank you very much" to the fans who have
sumbitted something for the QFN Bootleg Book.

The provisioanl tile is:

The Ultimate Queen Reference Book for Unofficial Releases'.

Yes, a mouthful I know. If you can think of an alternative
which describes the contents I'll be happy to hear from you.

I would have liked more fans to send in reviews, and be
involved, but if a free copy of the completed book doesn't
appeal as a reward, I'm not sure what would.

In my opinion, the more fans who are involved the better, as
I would guess the book would then contain a broader outlook,
(for the review section) rather than just being from a few
fans' points of view, and could be seen as a boring list by
two or three fans. I don't want an elitist book, but one
which many fans can relate to.

Consequently, I need more reviews if this project is going
to succeed. It would be a mistake to assume I have been sent
all I need, as I haven't received even a quarter of what I
want to include.

Please don't think that someone else will already have sent
in a review which you have, as so far I have received only a
few duplicate reviews. Even when two or more fans review the
same recording, there are still differences in the comments.
which is good for cross-referencing and confirmation.

So, if you promised to send something when I originally
requested it, but didn't, please reconsider and begin
something now. Now, now, now, now! Just put on a bootleg
whilst you read this newsletter. Then you'll be in the mood
to send me review.

Many initial letters about the book were enthusiastic, but
not many of those fans actually sent in reviews, which is
very frustrating and disappointing for me as I know some of
those fans have large and interesting collections not yet
covered by the book.

I don't want to be pushy about it, but if you promised
something please send in at least a few submissions - it
will mean a complimentary copy of the printed book for you
when it's published.

Begin with three or four reviews and you'll soon see how
rewarding it can be. It doesn't take up too much time
either, and you'll be surprised at how good some recordings
sound having not heard them for a while.

If possible, please send reviews on the QFN pre-printed
sheet (obtainable directly from QFN), or on floppy computer
disc, (as the file named LAYOUT in the MISC directory of
this very disc).

If you don't have a copy of the paper version which you'd
prefer to complete, then please request it by phoning 01772
556117 and I will mail it to you as soon as possible.

I especially want reviews of vinyl releases, as much of what
I have to date concentrates on recent CDs (from 1990
onwards, mainly). Although these CDs themselves cover all
periods of Queen's career, and are sometimes bootlegs of
earlier recordings from vinyl, but this time around on a
different label. I don't have all the CD reviews needed, so
do continue to send CD reviews as well as vinyl too.

I will be including some details about tapes, but not the
type your mate did you, but the type which have printed
covers and even sometimes cases.

These tapes are usually considered less valuable than CD or
vinyl because the media is easily destroyed and lost,
although this leads to a type of rarity in itself.

Bootleg audio cassettes can usually be bought much cheaper
too.

On second thoughts maybe you should tell me of any audio
tapes you have, as I may not get a review of some releases
which are available on CD or vinyl which you have taped
copies of.

So, look at your collection and tell me what you have. Any
lists (printed/on disc) welcome. Draw my attention to
anything very rare or unusual if you are aware of it.
Thanks.

Don't forget, as well as listing the details such as Title,
Catalogue Number, Venue and Date etc, I also require your
personal comments about the release as a whole.

Remember it will be your reviews which make the book come
alive for the reader, rather being seen as just a boring
list. Details such as rarities performed (live or studio),
or if the recording isn't actually what the packaging says
it is. (which is quire common). These things are useful for
identification reasons. The more detail the better, as I can
always edit out anything not needed for the final draft. So,
put in as much as you like and describe releases as fully as
possible, mis-spelling, picture disc, anything you know
about the release. It will be a huge help.

Finally, although the following is not essential, I would
like to request that all reviews are accompanied by a
high-quality photocopy of any LP sleeves (back / front /
inside), preferably reproduced on a colour copier and
reduced to the size of a normal CD cover - as this is the
size I envisage using for the final thing. This will mean
that no extra reduction will be needed from artwork supplied
by you, which would result in further deterioration quality-
wise if copied and reduced. Send a normal copy if you aren't
sure.

OR

Take a CD case to your local 'copy shop' and ask for the
final copy to fit inside the CD case - it's easily done on
the advanced colour copiers of today and I want the
illustrations to look good and consistant.

I realise that a 12" vinyl will not fit onto an A3 size page
(colour copies maximum size), and a little at the top and
bottom of the cover will be missed off. This is acceptable.

Ideally I would like to be able to actually photograph the
original covers of recordings, but I realise that not
everyone will want to trust them to the postal service. If
you do send originals to QFN through the post, be sure to
send them well packed and by registered/recorded delivery
for insurance purposes. Also include stiff card inside the
envelope so your covers won't be folded.

CD covers should be copied at actual size (back / front /
inside / etc.) and also on a colour copier.

Any copying costs above 5 can be refunded by QFN, but
please inform me how many you intend doing, and of which
releases so I can check if I already have copies of the
cover you intend sending, as I may already have a copy
concerned sent in by someone else. In this case just send
your review for comparision and I can combine two or more
reviews is neccessary.

RECORDABLE CDs!
===============
It's very interesting to note that Phillips are about to
launch the first ever domestic recordable CD machine. It
will sell for about 500. Blank recordable 'gold' CDs (the
type of master CDs need to put music on) will retail for
about 3. A bootleggers dream!

Apparently this move has been opposed by the BIG players
(major recording companies) in the music industry, as they
know it will not only dent their sales, but change the
market forever.

When Phillips sell their new machine, permanant digital
copies will become a reality. A copy will be possible, from
one digital source (the original CD) to another digital
source (the 'gold' blank CD). Any recordable digital machine
at a reasonable price will damage the future of music as
the major record companies

Whatever happens, as I say, it will change the market for
ever.

Special thanks so far to:
Jon James, Jim Jenkins, Margaret Hopper, Darren Mundy,
Margaret Hopper and Brian Trubshaw.

Review :
One of the first bootlegs to feature an almost complete show
from 'The Hot Space Tour '82' (only 'We Will Rock You' from
the encore is missing). Released in 1983 and manufactured in
Italy. Comes in glossy sleeve featuring two bodies
intertwined while rear cover has photo of the group and
track listing. Original copies are on dark green vinyl with
labels featuring LORA logo (two legs in stockings). Later
re-issues in 1990's come on various coloured vinyl and the
green vinyl is a lighter green. In 1993 it was re-released
on black vinyl in a gatefold sleeve (cover of this shows
photos from 'Magic' tour, inside has photo of group from
'Slightly Mad' video shoot, live concert from '78, rear has
track listing with 4 promotional photos at time of 'These
Are The Days' video shoot), labels on records are black with
'Get Down' printed on them. Show starts with 'Flash Intro'
tape and includes songs not played in UK such as 'Calling
All Girls' and 'Put Out The Fire'. An excellent show. The
only gripe about this marvellous production is the recording
levels. If putting on to a tape your recording levels need
to be set to maximum. Perhaps it is something to do with
squeezing just over 2 hours of playing time on to vinyl. In
1993/4 the show was released on a 2CD set called 'Domo
Arigato' (A2157)

Review :
A classic German bootleg released in 1983. Has deluxe
turquoise and black cover of old 1/2 pence stamps with photo
of Queen in classic 'Bohemian Rhapsody' pose; rear cover
shows Freddie from 1978 in concert & track listing. Label of
record has track listing on one label, other label has
copies of 1/2 pence stamps. Has been re-released on vinyl
with same number (EEN - 98) as 'Black And White Queen'
(multi-coloured vinyl). Also available on CD as 'Rhapsody In
Red'. Show is the classic Christmas concert broadcast live
on Christmas Eve 1975 by Radio 1 and BBC 2's 'Old Grey
Whistle Test'. This was the first version to feature 'White
Queen' on the main set list, however, it has no encores. It
is a superb show. The group were on a 'roll' by now, as
anyone who saw the show knows. A great version of 'Brighton
Rock' and 'In The Lap Of The Gods.....Revisited' (remember
all the dry ice pouring over the stage?) 1500 copies made.

An Italian bootleg, released in 1985. 500 copies made.
Red sleeve with photos of 'The Works' tour.
No track listing on cover.

This bootleg features the full show, from the 'Machines
Intro' to 'God Save The Queen'. Highlights must be the
medley in 'Somebody To Love' when the group brought back
some of the golden oldies and of course the excellent 'Stone
Cold Crazy' and 'Great King Rat', leading into Brian's
guitar solo. An excellent show and one of the earliest
releases of a full show from this tour. Labels are black and
white with 'The Day Side' and 'The Night Side' wording

Review:
Queen's last ever concert.
This audience recording features the full show apart from
Brian May's guitar solo. An outstanding performance in front
of Queen's largest UK audience, this is a must for Queen
fans who attended the concert and for the fact it was their
last 'live' performance and just shows what the world lost
when Freddie died. Glossy colour cover showing Queen
performing in the 'Princes Of The Universe' video, rear
cover has black and white photo of group from Live Aid promo
shot. Supposedly 1000 copies pressed. German origin,
although some dealers claimed it was American. Released in
1987. labels are blue and black with the title 'The Wizards
Quest' and 'Continuing Saga Records' printed on them, yellow
and black with same wording (different colour on each LP)

Review :
After the large outdoor concert at Mannheim (see 'Done Under
Pressure' or 'Reigns The World'), Queen moved to Munich
where this audience recording was made. Unfortunately, it
has feedback at times and the bass and drums are very
'muddy'. Brian's guitar sounds slightly 'tinny', but
Freddie's vocals are satisfactory. Obviously, this is all
due to the recording takes at the venue. The songs performed
followed the usual set list for the 'Magic' tour (in fact
the only night it varied was the second night at Wembley
when they performed 'Hey Big Spender'). Comes in black
sleeve with gold crest and title. No track listing with the
records. Records have 2 different labels. One has 'Not
Guilty' label (famous for releasing many soundboard
recordings of Bruce Springsteen) and the other has a
snarling dog.

Review:
An American bootleg released in late 70's. Two versions
exist - 1000 copies in a wrap round insert and 200 with
small insert. The LP was re-released in the 80's. This vinyl
bootleg is almost one hour long. It starts with the Kenny
Everett intro tape of an orchestra warming up, then the
conductor bringing them to order and saying 'Ladies and
Gentlemen. A night at the opera' which ran into backing tape
of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' before the band burst on to stage.
From the beginning it is an excellent show and features
that, as yet unreleased, magnificent 'Hangman' and a
stunning 'See What A Fool I've Been'. Some of this show is
available on the CD 'The Year Of The Opera'. This American
bootleg is a copy of a rare Japanese vinyl bootleg called
'Invite You To A Night At The Budokan'. Labels are black and
white with 'Duck Records - Ltd Ed - Collectors Records -
Duck Hits' then list of tracks all with Duck in the title
e.g. 'Disco Duck', 'Stairway To Duckberg' etc.

Cost = 10
Current Value = 60

If you've enjoyed reading this bootleg section then you'd
like the QFN bootleg book due for publication in the near
future. Maybe you can supply some details and reviews. It
means a free copy when the book is published.
