Vertical Twist Sound Sampler
{fon:tri}

I remember the days when I had my Commodore 64. I used to buy a
disc magazine and there was a music package that had a sample of the
Neighbours theme tune. It amazed me how they got the computer to do
that, especially as the computer only had 64K. Then I got an Arc (a
wise move!) and saw an advert for a sound sampler from Vertical
Twist. The first thing that came to my mind was that I've got to buy
it, and I did. I was pretty amazed at the samples that I was
producing, but after a while I saw an advert for a sampler that was
10 cheaper and looked better than the quite poor specification of my
sampler and you got a microphone with it. What you get is a little
grey box that plugs into the printer port with a lead that plugs into
the headphone socket of your hi-fi or whatever you are going to use,
but unlike some other samplers, it doesn't have another connector for
the printer to plug in, which is surprising as it's one of the more
expensive ones. You also get a sampling program called Pulse, which
is quite good, allowing you to save as a Tracker, Armadeus or
relocatable module sample. The Tracker samples aren't saved
correctly, so I have to save as an Armadeus sample to use in Tracker.
I have to sample at 20833Hz to get a decent sample quality, unlike
other samplers that give a quite good sample quality at 10KHz. But
sometimes I can get away with 13KHz (just!). It's editing facilities
are quite good though. You can select areas of the sample, cut it
out, filter it, reverse it, fade in/out and over/under sample.

Facilities 7/10
Sample quality 6/10
Value for money 5/10
Overall 6/10

If this hadn't of been the only sampler advert I saw, I wouldn't
have bought this, although the software seems superior to the rest.
