Why bother writing a review of a program that is used so much in
the Acorn world? This isn't a review as such but more of a moan. For
a commercial package it is about as reliable as a Public Domain
program when it comes to memory management, although any program
which carries out functions is prone to the odd error and most of the
time ArcFS is fine, but when it screws up it does so big time. When
writing this magazine it grew so much that it took more than 800k of
disc space so I used a compressed version to work on (big mistake).
When I was renaming a file the computer froze, the disc light was
still on and, as Acorn say removing the disc from the drive could
damage it, I performed a Ctrl Break. When I reopened the Archive half
of the files were missing, but the Articles directory was still there
(which was alright as that is what I wanted). When I opened the
directory I got an internal address error, then no window would open.
Other times ArcFS has produced files with the file type of 'File'
with no name, although the files appear to be on the disc they
aren't, therefore they can not be deleted, loaded or manipulated in
any way. Don't let this put you off ArcFS as it is the most useful
program on the Arch, as long as you always keep backups of any
important data you are compacting and watch that memory. I just
thought that you might be interested in the errors which can occur
when using this program.
