Hard Disk Organisation
______________________

The key to preventing your hard drive from becoming a
spaghetti junction of mixed up files is to simply use a
lot of directories. The aim of any large filing system, is
to allow the creation of a directory tree, which basically
makes the the organisation and use of the stored data much
easier.

Firstly your root directory (i.e. the one that appears
when you click on the hard disk icon) should contain the
obligatory programs which are !System, and !Fonts. I'd
also add !Menon to this as it really does speed up any
work in the desktop. You should also have a !Boot file -
see the boot files article in this section for more info
on this subject. All the other files in root directory
should be directories.

You should work out all the main areas of computing
that your software comes under, and create a directory for
each one. I have things like DTP, CAD, Utilities, New Dawn
etc... But remember, its best not too have more than 20
files in the root, otherwise you'll need to use the scroll
bar to see all of them - RiscOS won't bring up the window
any bigger than for twenty files. There's nothing wrong
