mentioned is, more often than not, the BBC. Readers who
have been Acorn users for a number of years will no doubt
remember The Domesday System, a co-operative venture
between Acorn and the BBC to celebrate the 900th
anniversry of the compilation of the original Domesday
book.

The technology has moved on a bit since then. Instead of
the dustbin lid sized laser disc, based on the technology
of the 1970s, the software medium is a derivative of the
1980s compact disc. So instead of full-screen still
images from a laser disc, we now have full-screen images
with speech, music and more from the modern consumer
multimedia systems. They will also play standard compact
discs as well.

If you have read about or have seen any of these systems
in action, then you may have an idea of what the term
"multimedia" represents. On the other hand, perhaps you
have been thoroughly confused by all the hype and just
don't see what all the fuss is about.

Defining multimedia
