The hype and the reality

Multimedia is one of those areas which has suffered
over-exposure in the press over the past year.  Big names
in the computer industry claim that multimedia is the way
forward and that it will become commonplace in everyones'
lives by the end of the decade.  But can a few commercial
product launches and all the media hype convince more than
a small dedicated minority to come to terms with
multimedia on a regular basis?

Multimedia is such a wide-ranging subject area that it is
impossible to do more than touch the surface in this
article.  My aim by the end of the article is to give the
reader a good understanding of what multimedia is.
