Enemy ground artillery
^^^^ ^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The artillery utilised at ground level by the enemy consists of two weapons,
either an anti-aircraft gun (similar to your machine gun) or a surface-to-
air missile launcher (similar to your own missiles). The AA guns will simply
fire in your general direction in the hope that they will eventually hit
you. They are fairly easy to destroy and their effect on your craft is of no
real signficance unless done constantly. The SAMs are far more devastating.
Two or three shots from these heat-seeking missiles are enough to annihalate
you. They provide a more difficult task to destroy than the AA guns and we
advise that you proceed with caution. These are only found at depots or at
the larger enemy instalations because of running costs. We believe that the
Russians make use of two varieties of SAM launchers; either a mobile truck
or a permanent bunker design. Both have equally destructive effects. If a
missile is fired at you there are three ways in which to prevent it hitting
you. Firstly, fly away; not advised: the missiles are very fast and you are
unlikely to be able to out run it. You could fly behind a building or
mountain, but it can be dificult then to keep your position in one place
until the missile passes. The most successful procedure is to release a
flare. This is done by pressing <F>, upon which a pair of bright orange
lights will be fired from the back of your plane. Their effect is to
generate a great deal of heat, confusing the missile to follow them as
opposed to you.
