Altering the preferences via the main menu isn't a really hard job.
However, the preferences can also be altered in the Desktop with a text
editor like !Edit or !Zap. To edit the preferences in the Desktop, Shift+
Double-click the 'Prefs' file or ALT+Double click one of your own Prefs.
The Preferences will be loaded into your text editor.
If you've done this you will see a text file divided in different areas
with different options. You can also add some special options ( we'll talk
  about this later ).
Below, you can see a sample Preferences file, comments are given after the
  ';' token :

  Other options
  =============
  CD Music :
Just switch the Emotions music off, and play the CD!
Emotions also supports CD music. Enter the option 'CDDevice=x'
in the [Misc] area (x=device / CDRom drive number).
If there is a CD in this slot it will be played. An extra
volume bar is now present in the Preferences to set the volume.
You can also add the option 'CDVolume=xx%' in the [Audio]
area to set the volume. xx=is from 0% TO 100%.

DSym/Coco :You can play music from the desktop, and then load Emotions
             afterwards, without corrupting the music.
I suggest you convert them first to Protracker format, if you
can't or won't then turn music and soundFX off and it'll work.

  Protracker:
          1. Edit the Prefs file and add the options 'musicoption=-l' in the
[Audio] area, now play your song in a music player that uses
QTMModule 1.22. This will work now.

          2. You can also make setup files, or use RTracker/PDTracker setup
files. You can shuffle between the songs from within the game
             in this way.

Those setup files are made easy : Make a new text file
and Shift+Drag all music files into this window and save it
(note that every file must begin on a new line). Enter the
option 'musicsetup' in the [Audio] area, and enter the music
setup path. Note that only songs less than 300k can be played
             from Emotions
