                                Rhapsody 2
                                ==========

                              A Short Manual
                              ==============

This demo version of Rhapsody 2 is run by double clicking on the !Rhapsody
icon. The program automatically loads four scores which are presented on
screen in a tiled effect.

To view a full score click on the re-size icon in the top right hand corner
of the window.

Playing scores
==============

        To play a score press Menu on the mouse slide over the arrow to the
right of Play from and click on Start.

Scrolling a score
=================

        To see the score scrolling whilst it is playing go into the Options
men and click on the scroll option. When the option has a tick by it the
score will scroll.

Playing through Midi
====================

        If you have a Midi keyboard and a Midi card in your computer you can
connect the Midi out from the computer to the Midi in on the keyboard.
You must also select the Midi option in the Options menu. Now when you play
the sound is transmitted to the Midi instrument.

        Unless you are very lucky the voices in the Midi keyboard will not
match those required by the scores. To rectify this go to the
Stave > Reassign menu and click on the box to the right of the Midi Program
No. to toggle it to the correct Midi program number to suit your keyboard.

        For example in the JoplinI piece you will need to set both parts to
Honky Tonk piano if available. You should also set each stave to transmit on
its own Midi channel by clicking in the box to the right of the word 'chan'.
As an example on a Roland D5 the first stave would be set up to use Midi
channel 1 with Midi program number 4 (Honky Tonk). Stave two would use
channel 2 and also Midi program number 4.

Capturing through Midi
======================

        You will need to connect the Midi Out of your Keyboard to the Midi
In of the computer. Click on the Rhapsody icon on the icon bar and a blank
score is opened. Click into the score at the first bar line so that a cream
cursor appears. Go to the Capture menu and click on the Real time option.
You can now play on the Midi keyboard and whatever you play is captured in
the computer (It is not displayed yet on the staves). To finish capturing
click on the Stop Capture menu item which has replaced the Play from item.

NOTE: You should only play in one part at a time.

        You now have the data in the machine and must quantize it before it
is displayed. You do this by going to the Transcribe menu and clicking on
OK. You can alter the quantize level by selecting different note values and
re Transcribing the data, after having deleted the original using the Score
> Discard option.

        To play back your music proceed as for playing back one of the
supplied scores.

Printing
========

        To print a score go to the Score > Format menu and click on OK. A
formatted score appears and if you press Menu on the mouse whilst over this
window another menu appears. Go off to the Print sub menu and click on OK.
If you have a printer connected and the relevant RISC OS printer driver
loaded then the first page will be printed.

Editing Scores
==============

        To edit a score click on the Show Panels menu item. Two panels open
up and these enable you to add, delete and insert notes. Use Select on the
icons to toggle between the options available. You can drag the notes, rests
etc by clicking over the currently selected object (highlighted orange) with
Menu. As long as you drag the note straight from Panel 1 into the score you
can then drop the note at the required position with Select. If you go
outside the score or Panel 1 the cursor reverts to a pointer. The easiest
thing to do is put panel 1 over your score.

That's All
==========

        Well not really. There are many more options in Rhapsody 2 but
hopefully by now you will have the hang of it and will be able to
investigate the other options yourself. Although you are probably so
impressed that you want to rush off and buy a full version right away.
