SmartBar - Windows 95-style Icon Bar

by Matt Browne

If you've ever used Windows 95, you'll probably know that the 'task bar' along the bottom of the Windows 95 Desktop can be made to auto-hide, disappearing when not required and only reappearing when the mouse pointer is moved to the bottom edge of the Desktop.

Matt Browne's SmartBar provides a similar feature for RISC OS. When a number of RISC OS windows are covering the Icon Bar, the usual way of bringing the Icon Bar to the front of the Desktop is to press Shift-F12. With SmartBar installed, simply move the mouse pointer to the bottom of the Desktop, hold it there for about 1/2 a second, and the Icon Bar will automatically pop to the front of the Desktop. When the mouse pointer moves away from the bottom of the Desktop, the Icon Bar will automatically return to the back of the Desktop.
