PDF - Adobe Acrobat and PDF viewer

by Leo Smiers et al (Public Domain)

Prior to HTML (the language for creating WWW pages) becoming a popular method for creating and distributing totally portable documents which can be viewed on any computer capable of supporting a Web browser, the standard way of creating and distributing a portable document was to use the Portable Document Format, also known as Acrobat from the name of the main PDF document creator. (If you visit ARM Ltd's Web site, you find that the technical documentation for the various ARM processors are in PDF format. The format is still widely use for distributing technical and programming manuals and datasheets.) The format was invented by Adobe and it was so portable that PDF documents could be viewed and created on all the major computer platforms (i.e. only PC and Mac). Acorn users no longer need to feel left out, however, as programmer Leo Smiers has converted the UNIX PDF viewer, xpdf, to RISC OS, and you'll find the full version on this disc.

Note that the official Acorn filetype for PDF files is &ADF. To view a PDF file, simply set its filetype to &ADF and double-click on it.
