AutoSaver - Automatic document saver

by Christopher Pedley

Version 2.06

AutoSaver provides a facility whereby any document you are working on can be saved automatically at user-defined intervals. The program can be configured either to give you a warning to save, by displaying a save box, or to effect the save automatically without any user intervention. Most users have come across a situation where their machine crashes and an important document is lost because it hadn't been saved. AutoSaver will alleviate the consequences of this by ensuring that only material you have created since the last save will be lost.

The application can be run in the usual way from the RISC User menu system, or by double-clicking on its icon in a directory viewer. An icon is installed on the icon bar. The icon bar menu has four options: Info, Save, Options and Quit. Info and Quit perform their usual functions.

The Save option leads to a writable submenu which allows you to enter the time in minutes between each auto-save. The default is 10 minutes.

The Options item leads to a submenu containing two options, Warning and Return, each of which can be toggled on or off. Ticking the Warning option will cause the program to bleep and wait for a second before saving. This gives you a chance to stop typing because the text you are typing may end up at the end of the filename.

Ticking the Return option will cause the program to send a carriage return after opening the save window, thus activating the save automatically. You may wish to leave this unset because you might not want to overwrite the original file. Alternatively, you could use AutoSaver in conjunction with the SmartSave module published in RISC User 6:7, which will enable you to save automatically to a different filename each time so that you retain the original.
