Patience+ - Desktop card game

by Alan Stout

Patience+ is an excellent desktop implementation of the game of Patience.
It is a replacement for the long-standing RISC OS version which is supplied with the computer by Acorn, but it does
require a higher resolution 16-colour screen mode (at least 640 480
pixels) and RISC OS 3. Its size probably means that it needs a 2Mb system to run.

The game features colourful graphics, and you can even choose between several different designs of card back.

The application can be run in the normal way from the RISC User menu system, or by double-clicking on its icon in a directory viewer.

The rules
The rules are as for the standard game of Patience.

Play the cards by the normal select-and-drag method of the RISC OS desktop.
If you click Adjust on an exposed card the program will attempt to
automatically place it on the correct target heap (clicking Adjust on an
exposed ace will relocate it on the first available empty heap space).

You are permitted to undo your last move when you consider a better
alternative is available, but you cannot retrace your steps any further
than that. Undo a move by dragging a card back to its previous position.

If you complete a game, click Select on the card table to receive a prize.

Menu options
Clicking Menu over the card table window reveals a menu with the following options:
Deal again - selecting this menu option will cause a new hand to be dealt, abandoning the current game.

Reveal - will turn over all hidden cards on the main playing area and the game is then abandoned. Select Deal again to play another game.

Cheat - instead of turning over 3 cards each time from the pack, the cards will be revealed singly. This feature should only be used in dire situations and is not strictly allowed according to the rules of patience. Also, it does not guarantee that you will succeed.

Select card - displays a variety of card backs for you to choose from. Click Select over the design of your choice.

The icon bar menu has three options, of which Info and Quit perform the usual RISC OS function. The third option is Save choices which allows you to save the default settings such as your chosen card design.
