Newsgroup List - A list of Usenet newsgroups

The Netline article in this month's RISC User magazine looks at the subject of Usenet: the system of newsgroups on the Internet which allow people from all over the world to take part in dicussion forums on topics that interest them.

To accompany the article we are supplying a list of newsgroups which are currently available. Since new groups are being created all the time, some of which are local to particular parts of the world, it is impossible to compile a list that is guaranteed to contain every newsgroup in existence. However, the list provided here should contain most of the current groups, and will certainly offer plenty of variety if you are looking for some new topics to discuss!

The list takes the form of a text file. The easiest way to find a selection of newsgroups on any topic is to load the file into an editor and perform a search operation. For example, searching for "acorn" and "archimedes" should give you a list of all groups which are Acorn-related. To subscribe to a group, you should consult the documentation for your Internet software for details of how to do this on your particular system.

You should note that the existence of a newsgroup does not automatically mean that you are able to subscribe to it. Many Internet Providers do not carry the full range of newsgroups on their news server. If you find a group that interests you, and your provider does not appear to carry it, ask them nicely and they may add the group to their list.
