UniKern - Automatic Font Kerner

by Matt Browne

UniKern is a useful utility which can help to improve the look of DTP documents immensely.

RISC OS 3 provides very powerful font kerning facilities for use with RISC OS 3
fonts. Unfortunately, these extra features are rarely utilised by
applications. With UniKern, however, every application will use kerning on RISC OS 3
fonts, and any printed output will also be kerned! The effects can make your
documents look much more professional.

Kerning is a term used to describe the merging of two letters. For
example, take the word AVON. If it were printed in a magazine or book, etc,
the A and V would be moved slightly closer together to improve the aesthetics of the
word. This occurs with other letter combinations too, and
helps printed text to flow and not look disjointed. The text then becomes
much easier to read and very pleasing to the eye.

UniKern is written in 100% ARM Assembler for speed and efficiency. The
Front End uses DoggySofts WimpExtension module.

UniKern is a relocatable module. An application which acts as a front end to the module is also included. Running the item from the RISC User menu system will load the front end and also open the archive containing the application. If you wish to have the UniKern module loaded every time you power up your computer, you should move the module (which is in the Resources.Modules directory inside the !UniKern application directory) to a suitable place on your hard disc, and include a line in your boot sequence to run the module.

A more detailed description together with instructions on using the program can be found in the !Help file inside the application.
