CD_Utils Two CD-ROM utilities

by Martin Sperl

The utilities described below can be used to allow CDFS (Compact Disc Filing System) users to see extra filetypes on PC CD-ROMs and to use the new Toshiba 4101 CD-ROM drive. The applications can be found by double-clicking on the CD_Utils icon in the directory display, or by clicking on the icon in the RISC User menu system.

TOSH4101
This program allows CDFS Users to use the new Toshiba 4101 drive with CDFS 2.20. The original version does not support this drive at all - just the old 3401 and 3301 drives. This small program solves this problem in a simple way. Double-click on the !Tosh4101 icon and it creates a relocatable module called Tosh4101 in the root-directory of the current drive. After loading this module, you can use the CD-ROM drive with no problems.

It is sensible to load the Tosh4101 module in your Boot file if you use this drive.

CD_TYPEFIX
One of the main problems with CDFS when using PC CD-ROMs is that there is only limited support for DOS to RISC OS filetype translation, e.g. TXT to TEXT (&FFF) or GIF to GIF (&695). Filetype extensions that are not recognised by CDFS such as TIF, ZIP and others will always be treated as Data files.

This application adapts CDFS in such a way that these restrictions no longer affect CD use. It uses the same translations as DOSFS, so if, for example, you issue the command:
     *DOSMAP ZIP Archive
all new directories opened which contain files with a DOS type of ZIP will be appropriately typed as Archive.

All you need to do is to double-click on !CDTypeFix and it will create a new module in the root directory of your current drive called CDFS???fix, where the ??? stands for the new version-number of CDFS. The module version is increased by 0.01, so if you are currently using CDFS 2.10 then the new module will be called CDFS211fix. The module will also be loaded by CDTypeFix. Again, it is wise to load this new module in your Boot file.

Currently this program can patch CDFS 2.1x and 2.2x.
