Gobble - The Word Game

by Terry Over

Gobble is a challenging word game that will tax your mental and verbal
skills. The object is to try and create as many words as possible from a
grid containing sixteen random letters. In a race against the computer, you
only have as much time to find words as it takes Gobble to scan through
its entire dictionary and compile a list of all the possible words.

The only rules are that you may not use the same letter twice in one word,
unless it appears more than once in the grid, and every letter that you
choose has to be adjacent to the previous one. But it's not as easy as it
sounds. As you search for words, the computer will simultaneously be
scanning its own dictionary. As soon as it completes its search, the game
will end, and you will be able to browse through all the words the computer
has found in the grid.

PLAYING THE GAME
Install Gobble by double-clicking its icon in a Filer window or by
clicking on it in the RISC User menu system.

Click on the icon bar icon to open the Letters and Player windows. The
Letters window contains the letters you can use to make words, while the
Player window contains the words you have found so far. Clicking on a
letter will start the game and add that letter to the current word in the
Player window. The Undo button removes the last letter from the word and
places it back in the Letters grid. When a word is complete, click the
Next button and find the next.

The computer finds its words while you are finding yours. The game ends when
the computer displays its word list. If you have more words, you win,
otherwise the computer wins.

If you have completed your word list, you can watch the computer continue
its search by selecting the Word Search option from the menu opened by
clicking Menu over any of the Gobble windows. The computer's search can be
stopped by selecting Stop search from the same menu.

STARTING A NEW GAME
A new game is started by selecting the New game or Manual data options
from the menu. Selecting New game will fill the letter grid with random
letters, whereas Manual data allows you to type in the letters of your
choice for use in the grid.
