Aces Desktop Patience

by Mike Ironmonger

Aces is an addictive version of Patience that runs on the Desktop. To
install it on the icon bar, simply double-click on its icon in the Filer
window or run it from the RISC User Menu System. Once installed, click on
its icon to open the main window. In the left of the window is the stock and
to the right is a tableau of four columns. Initially, each column contains
one card. The idea of the game is to end up with the four aces exposed, one
at the bottom of each column.

Play is very simple - an exposed card can be discarded only if another card
of the same suit with a higher value is exposed. To discard a card simply
click on it. When you've discarded all you can, click on the stock and
another four cards are dealt. You can then continue discarding cards.

If, by discarding a card, you create a space (an empty column) you can move
one of the other exposed cards into the space. Do this simply by dragging
the card into the space.

If you complete a game, you may get onto the high score table and be asked
to enter your name. In this case the high score table appears automatically,
but you can also see it by choosing the High scores option from the main
menu.

Clicking the menu button over the high score window opens a menu with two
options. The first is Auto save, and when this option is on, the high
scores will automatically be saved whenever they change. If the option is
off, you can save the high scores simply by choosing the Save option in
the menu.

Clicking the menu button over the icon bar icon opens a menu with four
options. As well as the usual Info and Quit options, Help and Reset
options are provided. Choosing the Help option will open a window that
displays the help file you're reading now. The Reset option allows the
high scores to be zeroed, although you are asked for confirmation before
this goes ahead.
