Trashcan (RISC OS 3)

by Keith McAlpine

Trashcan is a small utility that provides a dustbin for your Desktop. It provides a very secure method for deleting files, as any file that is dragged onto it is not immediately deleted, but rather moved into a special Trashcan directory. The files will only be deleted when you Empty the bin. Trashcan has been written specifically for RISC OS 3, and makes use of features such as multi-tasking copying and deleting.

WHERE TO INSTALL TRASHCAN
It is not a good idea to run the Trashcan application directly from floppy disc, because every time that you put rubbish into it, it will need to access the original floppy. If you have a hard disc, then copy the Trashcan application onto this by dragging its icon from a directory viewer.

If you do not have a hard disc, it is best to install Trashcan onto a RAM disc. You can create a new RAM disc by dragging out the RAM Disc entry in the Task Manager's Task display window (from the acorn or the 'A' icon on the icon bar).

USING THE PROGRAM
Running Trashcan installs a dustbin on the left-hand side of the icon bar. If you drag a file or a selection of files onto the dustbin, they will be moved into a directory inside Trashcan. The dustbin icon on the icon bar will change to reflect that it now contains rubbish. If you later want to retrieve a file from the dustbin, double-click on the dustbin, or select Show Contents in the Trashcan menu. A Filer window will open that contains the files you dragged to the dustbin. Copy the file that you want to retrieve into your work directory, and when you are satisfied that you want to delete the rest of the files, select Empty Bin in the Trashcan menu. The files will then be deleted (for good).

C SOURCE CODE
The Trashcan application is written in C, and the C source may be found inside the application's C directory.
