Word Search
by Andrew Benson

NOTE: This program requires the Acorn outline font manager version 2.42 or later, which is not supplied on this disc. It is available, for example, on the Ovation Demo Disc from RISC Developments.

NOTE: Only words in upper case will be accepted, so make sure the Caps Lock light is lit before using this application.

Word Search is an application which takes words and makes them into a word search. This puzzle can then be printed out using the RISC OS printer drivers.

The application is very simple to use. Running the application installs an icon on the icon bar, and clicking Menu over this icon opens a standard menu with 'Info' and 'Quit' options. Any other button will open the main window, which contains various icons as follows.

The 'Size' icon shows the current size of the word search. The default setting is for a 10x10 character matrix; to change this simply enter the new value in the icon. Obviously the word search must be big enough to hold all your words, and I find that anything up to 25x25 works well.

The 'Word' icon allows you to enter the words for the word search. Simply enter the first word into the icon and press Return to store the word and clear the icon ready to enter the next word. Up to thirty words can be entered here. The two arrows allow you to scroll through your list of words. The 'Add' icon will add a space into the list so you can enter a new word, but note, however, that this is done automatically on pressing Return. The 'Delete' icon will remove the current word from the list if more than one one word has been entered.

The 'Font' icon shows which outline font is currently to be used when printing. Pressing Menu over the window will open a menu containing a list of all fonts available. To select a different font simply choose it from the menu. It should be noted that the printout looks best when used with a non-proportional font, such as the Corpus family where all characters take up the same amount of space.

Finally, the 'Print' icon will create the word search and send it to the printer. Any of the usual printer drivers can be used here. The word search is printed centrally on the page inside a box, and a list of all the words also appears under the puzzle in alphabetical order.
