Improving Monochrome Scanned Images
by Ledger White

Scanty is a sprite conversion program that can dramatically improve the quality of images scanned by a monochrome scanner.

Running this application opens up a directory window containing the Scanty scanner conversion program and an example sprite file, GirlX. When the Scanty program is run, it will ask for the size of the dithered pattern (2,3,4,5 or 6), the amount of contrast (High, Medium or Low), and the full filename of the file to be processed. The file is then processed, and the result is saved under the original name with an 'X' appended.

The sprite file GirlX is an example sprite created by Scanty. It looks best in a 256 colour mode, like mode 15 or mode 21.

See the magazine for details of how to set up your scanner to produce a sprite for use with Scanty.
