Giant File Backup
by Kell Gatherer

This application is an enhanced version of the GiantFile application on the RISC User Volume 5 Issue 5 magazine disc. It permits the backup of large hard disc files onto floppies.

When this application is run, it installs an icon on the icon bar. When a file is dragged onto this icon, a window will be opened displaying information such as file size, file type, number of E-format floppies required etc. Have the required number of blank, E-format floppies standing by.

Clicking on the 'Transfer' icon starts the process going: the application will prompt for change of floppy when necessary.

Although the application is multi-tasking, it hogs much of the processor's time during file operations, so it is possible to halt the transfer temporarily by clicking on the 'Pause' icon: resume transfer by clicking on the icon a second time.

RESTORING A FILE
Only a file which has been saved using GiantFile can be restored to the hard disc. Drag the !Giant icon onto the icon bar icon, and GiantFile will read information on the restore. At this point you can do any of the following:
a) change the file's type: click on the 'File type' box, amend the contents and hit Return.
b) save the file to its original full pathname by clicking on 'Restore'
c) change the destination filename in the 'Save to' box, then click on 'Restore'
d) drag the file's icon to the directory of your choice, in which case the leafname in the 'Save to' box is used.

Whilst this program has been extensively tested (using MultiStore files of 1.5Mb and upwards), you are advised to make a hard disc backup of any important files before satisfying yourself that GiantFile will treat your files correctly: Murphy's Law - if anything can go wrong, it will - applies as much to computing as to any other sphere of activity!

NOTE: Although GiantFile will run correctly if it is run from floppy, it will ask for a lot of disc swapping. It is therefore advisable to copy the application onto your hard disc or into RAM disc.

This new version of GiantFile will now automatically detect whether ADFS, SCSI or IDE is being used.
