Font Name Converter
by Alan Wrigley

This application enables you to change the name of a font, for example from Paladin to Pembroke. For more information on why you might need to do this, see the article in this month's magazine entitled Font Name Conflicts.

Running the application installs an icon on the icon bar. Dragging a font directory to this (i.e. the directory which carries the name of the font, such as "Homerton" or "Corpus") will open a command window on the screen and prompt you for the new font name. If a file called Outlines cannot be found anywhere within the directory structure, an error message will report that it is not a font directory.

Provided that at least one Outlines file is found, the program will then look for all Outlines and IntMetrics files within the directory and any subdirectories. This is to ensure that all weights and styles are altered (e.g. Bold, Medium, Italic etc.). Each file will be processed to alter the font name embedded within it, and finally the parent directory will be renamed with the new name. You can then use the font with its new name exactly as the old one. Note, however, that if any applications which handle outline fonts are already installed in your machine when you change the name, you must quit and re-install them before you attempt to use the renamed font, since the list of fonts they are aware of will still include the old name.
