Welcome to Heretic
==================

To begin installing Acorn Heretic, double click on !HerInst on your
Heretic floppy disc. You should follow the on-screen instructions,
and install the files to your hard drive. You will need your game
CD in the drive to install.

Play from CD (or Zip drive etc.)
================================

If you wish to play Heretic from your CD, rather than chewing up
15+Mb of hard disc space, only install the main Acorn Heretic
player to your hard drive (or even run it direct from your
install floppy - it's stored uncompressed in !HerInst.Heretic)
but don't install the WAD.

Now, when the main Heretic FrontEnd window is displayed, drag
the main datafile from your CD - the HERETIC.HERETIC.HERETIC/WAD
file - to the main window. Click Play to start.

Note that when running from CD, you cannot have CD audio
music.

You can copy the HERETIC.HERETIC.HERETIC/WAD file from your CD
onto another harddisc or even a removable drive such as a Zip
disc. Once you have done this, you should drag the file
to the main window. You may also wish to set the filetype
to "HerWad" (&ABE) so that you can double click on it.

If you want to install the WAD file to your hard disc properly
later, simply re-run the install program and just install
the level set.

New Options in the FrontEnd
===========================

Since the Acorn instruction leaflet went to press, the following
additional options have been added to the front end:

  Setup Music - With this selected, users with MIDI capability will
                hear music when the FrontEnd window is displayed,
                and you are configuring the game.

  Fixed - This option will use the specially supplied "fixed
                resolution" versions of the game, which should give
                higher performance on Arm 610 and 710 machines.

In the Misc window:

  Startup Messages - This will display the "DOS Startup" screen
                     which is disabled by default as it looks pretty
                     awful. It does, however, allow you to see the
                     loading messages, which could be helpful when
                     playing network games.

In the Sound window:

  Cache All Effects - This will force Heretic to pre-load all the
                      game sound effects when you first run it.
                      This will result in a slightly longer load
                      time, and fractionally more memory used, but
                      the sound effects will be already present in
                      memory when needed, rather than loaded of
                      disc. This will make the first level you
                      play much smoother, as it won't be loading
                      sound effects all the time.

Bonus "Cheat" in Game
=====================

We've left a few little "Easter Eggs" in the game which we've added
whilst developing the game. One which you can use to show off your
machine is "resamp" (type this whilst running the game). This will
enable bilinear texture filtering - something that normally
requires a 3DFX card on a PC. You can do it in software on your
RiscPC, although it's pretty demanding on the processor. Please
note that you may need to use the "cache" cheat to disable column
caching on SA machines to see this to full effect. It works in
both 8 and 24bpp. Please note that this is "unsupported"!

Full Documentation
==================

The full Heretic manual is on your game CD - the file Heretic/PDF
in the root directory of the CD.

If you own a PC card, you can use the Adobe Acrobat reader supplied
on the CD to view an print the full documentation (although most
instructions are give in the supplied Acorn instruction leaflet).

If you do not own a PC card, the third disc in your pack - Deathkings
of the Dark Citadel - includes !PDF, a RiscOS application which will
display and print the documents. Please note that due to the way
in which these manuals have been stored (essentially huge scans, split
into lots of "mini lines"), !PDF will take a long time to display each
page, even on a StrongArm machine.
