Introduction
===========================================================================

This new version of !Printers (1.53) offers many improvements over previous
version of the Acorn Printer Manager. The text file 'ReadMe' supplied on
!Printers 1.53 Disc 1 described the differences between this and previous
versions.

Please also refer to the 'ReadMe' file for details on how to report any
problems you may experience with this version.

!Printers computer requirements
===============================

For !Printers to work correctly it is necessary for your Acorn computer to
be fitted with RISC OS 3.10 or newer. To check which version of RISC OS is
fitted to your computer menu over the Acorn icon in the bittom right of the
desktop and use the info option at the top of the menu.

It is also necessary to have a minimum of 2Mbytes of memory fitted to the
computer. In some cases if you are trying to print large documents or
documents that contain a number of pictures it will be necessary to have
4Mbytes or more of memory installed. Having extra memory fitted to the
computer can speed up the printing times.

If you wish to use the background printing option of !Printers is is
necessary to have a hard disc installed.

Installing the new version of !Printers onto floppy / Hard Disc
===============================================================

** This release of !Printers does not work with the Computer Concepts
Turbo Drivers. If you wish to use this version of !Printers standalone
you will require a standard Centronics parallel cable. **

Pre Risc PC Acorn supplied floppy / Hard Disc systems.
------------------------------------------------------

The first step for installing the updated printer manager is to find where
your current printer manager is stored.

1. Removal of the original printer manager.

Acorn installs the printer manager application in the directory App1 on all
hard discs installed as standard. Once you have located the printer
manager it should be deleted from the hard disc of the computer. If you use
a floppy disc only system then the Printer manager application will need to
be deleted from all the floppy discs you have it installed on. Information
on how to delete directories/applications can be in the Welcome Guide
supplied with your computer (Deleting directories / applications is
indexed under deleting files within the Welcome Guide).

2. Copying the Printer manager to your hard disc / floppy disc.

Insert the disc labelled Printer Manager Disc 1. The application, !Printers,
can now be copied from the floppy disc we have supplied onto the hard disc,
either back into the App1 directory or an area of your choice. If the
!Printers application was found in App1 we would suggest it is copied back
to App1. The printer manager application can also be copied any floppy
discs that previously had the printer manager installed on them.
Information on how to copy files from one disc to another can be found in
the Welcome Guide supplied with the computer (copying files is referenced
under copying files within the Welcome Guide).

4. Network users only.

If you are intending to us !Printers from a network please read on otherwise
move to step 5. Disc 1 contains an updated version of the !Scrap
application that is mandatory to install for network users. Any copies of
!Scrap on the network should be deleted and replaced with the copy on Disc
1.

5. Dismount Disc 1 which is currently in the floppy drive of the computer.
Dismounting discs is performed by clicking once over the floppy drive icon
on the icon bar with the middle button, pointing with the pointer at the
word 'Dismount' on the menu that appears and clicking once with the left
mouse button over the word. Remove the Disc 1 from the drive.

6. Hard Disc users only.

Insert Disc 2 supplied with this application note. Locate the directory
'Printers' on your hard disc. Acorn installs this directory in the
directory App2. Once you have located the directory 'Printers' it should be
deleted from the hard disc. Once you have deleted the directory bring up
the directory viewer of disc two by using a single left click over the
floppy disc icon on the icon bar and copying the directory 'Printers' from
Disc two onto the hard disc. The directory 'Printers' can be copied
anywhere you wish onto the hard disc, we would suggest however that it is
copied to where to previous directory was deleted.

All the required components of the updated printer manager are now
installed. You can now go onto the section 'Setting up !Printers'.

Installing !Printers 1.53 on the Risc PC's fitted with RISC OS 3.50
-------------------------------------------------------------------

1. On the Risc PC the printer manager is installed in the directory
'Printing'. It is necessary to delete the !Printers application and the
directory 'Printers'. As all files on the Risc PC hard disc are locked it
is first necessary to unlock them. This is achieved by clicking the middle
button over the !Printers icon and then move down to the App '!Printers'
option and move of to the right so the sub menu appears, then move down to
the Access option and across to the right then click with the left button
on the 'Unprotected' option. Now follow the same procedure with with
directory 'Printers'.

2. It is now necessary to copy the !Printers application and the directory
'Printers' from the floppy discs enclosed to the directory 'Printing'.

Installing !Printers 1.53 on the Risc PC's fitted with RISC OS 3.60
-------------------------------------------------------------------

1. On this level of Risc PC !Printers is supplied in ROM. The new version
of !Printers can be installed into the Apps directory on the hard disc so it
appears to have replaced the ROM based version.

2. It is necessary to delete the directory 'Printers' from the 'Printing
directory on the hard disc.As all files on the Risc PC hard disc are
locked it is first necessary to unlock them. This is achieved by clicking
the middle button over the directory 'Printers' and then move down to the
Dir. 'Printers' option and move of to the right so the sub menu appears,
then move down to the Access option and across to the right then click with
the left button on the 'Unprotected' option.

3. It is now necessary to copy the directory 'Printers' from !Printers 1.53
Disc 2 floppy disc to the directory 'Printing'

Setting up !Printers 1.53
=========================

1. Ensure there is no unsaved data currently on screen.

2. Reset the computer, this is achieved by holding down the key marked CTRL,
pressing and releasing the key marked BREAK and then releasing the CTRL key.

3. Once the computer has the desktop showing again load the !Printers
application from the directory / floppy disc where you have just installed
it by double clicking with the left mouse button on the application. Once
!Printers is loaded it will display the icon shown below onto the icon bar.

<Insert Diag1>

4. It is now necessary to install the correct definition file you your
printer. Locate the directory 'Printers' which you have just copied to your
hard disc or if you are a floppy disc user locate the disc labelled Printer
Manager Disc 2 and insert the disc into the drive. Enter the directory by
double clicking with the left mouse button over the 'Printers' directory
icon. This will open another directory viewer containing many directories
showing the names of printer manufacturers such as Acorn, Epson, HP etc. If
the name of the manufacturer of your printer is shown on the screen then
move on to step 5 otherwise continue reading step 4. The vast majority of
printers currently available can fall into one of the following categories

1. Dot matrix (9 pin or 24 pin) printers which support an Epson standard.
2. Deskjet / LaserJets which support the Hewlett Packard standard.
3. PostScript Lasers which support the Adobe PostScript standard (Level 1
   and 2).
4. Bubblejets which effectively support standard control codes using
   Bubblejet technology.

Acorn have endeavoured to support both the printer manufacturers who set the
standards in the printing world and also the popular printer suppliers.
Unfortunately due to the numbers of different printer manufacturers, it is
not possible to support directly the multitude of printers that exist,
however as shown above nearly all printers fall into certain categories.
Even though there may not be a particular definition file named for your
printer it is highly likely that one of the other definition files we supply
will support your printer offering all the facilities required when the
printer is used with Acorn equipment. At the end of this document are a
number of pages with lists of printers, set out by manufacturer in
alphabetical order, showing which definition files should be used.

5. Open the directory with the manufacturer's name which is most suitable
for your printer. Inside the directories will be definition files with the
names of printers produced by that manufacturer. If the printer definition
file you require is not listed please refer the list of printers, set out by
manufacturer in alphabetical order, showing which definition files should be
used. If you are not sure what standard your printer supports please refer
the manual supplied with the printer. The information you require will be
indexed under 'emulations'.

6. Once you have selected the appropriate definition file double click
on it and it will be loaded into the printer manager.

The printer manager icon on the icon bar will also be updated to show the
name of the printer type installed.

7. To ensure that the definition file you have chosen is still installed the
next time your load the printer manager it is necessary to save your choices
by clicking the middle button over the printer manager icon on the icon bar
and click with the 'Save choices' option with the left mouse button. If you
wish to have the printer driver installed every time the computer is
switched on please refer the the application note titled 'Setting up floppy
/ hard disc autobooting sequences'.

Other installation information
------------------------------

The above information has shown how to install just one printer definition
file. It is possible, however, to install any number definition files by
simply double clicking on other definition files or dropping them into the
'Printer control' window.

The ability to load more than one definition file can be useful for various
reasons. If a number of printers are to be used with a particular computer,
for example a Dot Matrix and a Laserjet within the classroom environment, it
is possible to have both definition files installed and for both icons to
appear on the icon bar. Clicking the left mouse button over either one of
the two definition files loaded on the icon bar selects that one and will
therefore be used by applications when printing. Below are two diagrams,
one showing the printer control window with two definition files installed
and the resulting printer manager on the icon bar with two definition files
installed.

<Insert Diag2>

The printer drivers have been set up to provide to the user what we feel are
the best settings for initial installation. The following will reveal the
default settings and give details of how to alter the settings to improve or
decrease the quality of printing.

Due to the print speed of dot matrix printer(a.k.a. bit image), which is
slow when compared to Inkjet, Bubblejet and Laser printers, the resolution
for printing has been set to a low level to offer the user a reasonable
printing speed. If your printer has the capability of printing colour then
the colour option has been selected automatically. It is possible to
configure the printer definition files and increase the resolution to
produce better quality printouts. Below is a screen shot of the 'Bit image
printer configuration' window. This window can be shown by holding down the
SHIFT key and performing a single left click on the printer manager icon.

<Insert Diag3>

Background printing
===================

From the 'Connections' dialogue box it is possible to select the background
print option. This option can only be used with applications such as !Draw
that follow the correct printer protocol.

Printing from !Paint
====================

Due to problems when printing from !Paint to various printers we would
recommend that !Paint (Sprite) files are imported into !Draw for printing.
This will allow better positioning of the sprite plus better quality output.

PostScript Multibin switching
=============================

The PostScript PDF template will be extended to support a paper feed
pathname (Currently to be found in !Printers.ps.Feeds.xxx). This pathname
specifies a directory containing PostScript files - one for each available
feed. The first line of the file must be of the form:

%%RISCOS_FeedName: <name>

The name will be extracted by !Printers and used to create a menu of
available feeds. The filename used for the feed files is unimportant, but
can start with a digit in order to provide a sorting order for the menu.
!Printers will also add a "No feed" option to allow PostScript to be sent to
a file without containing any printer specific code.

The ps back-end code will declare a new system variable, PDriver$PSFeed,
which contains the full filename of the feed file being used. The ps text
code and the PostScript printer driver will be modified to push the contents
of the file into the output stream.

The printer manager will also be extended to allow the ps back-end code to
insert the feed code when printing a PostScript file. Previous versions of
the printer manager do not call the back-end code when printing "native"
printer data.

The mechanism for specifying paper sizes will also change slightly. What
!Printers currently does is extract the first word from the paper size, eg:

A4 (Generic PS) -> A4

then use a message in the messages file to convert this into suitable
PostScript for selecting A4 paper. However, this has caused a lot of
problems for printers that don't support "normal" paper sizes, so what will
happen is that the paper size, eg A4, will be used as the leafname of a
paper size PostScript file, and the contents of this file will be output to
the stream. The filename is specified in the system variable
PDriver$PSPaper. The standard paper sizes and their PostScript mappings will
be pre-defined.

By default we currently only supply Canon LBP8MkIII as a printer that
supports multiple bin switching. This can be used as reference for other
PostScript printer bin switch files and indeed may work by default with
some.

!PrintEdit
==========

!Printedit no longers loads printer definition files when they are double
clicked on. They will now have to be dragged to the application icon when
installed on the icon bar.

!Repro
======

!Repro from Oak Solutions will no longer allow the editing of Palette files
supplied with this version of the printer manager.

List of known supported printers
================================

Acorn's printer manager system, '!Printers', is an application which
installs itself on the Icon Bar of the desktop like a normal RISC OS
application. Once loaded a printer definition file suitable for your printer
can be installed into the printer manager and then will be automatically
loaded when !Printers is run.

Acorn supply a large number of printer definition files as standard with
RISC OS 3.1/3.5/3.6 and additional definition files are also supplied with
the enclosed RISC OS 3.1 enhanced printer manager disc. There are a number
of printers and printer manufacturers that are also supported by Acorn, but
we do not have specific printer drivers for them.

The table starting on page three lists printer types supported by the RISC
OS 3.1/3.5/3.6. Those printers without a specific printer driver supplied
have the nearest equivalent in brackets. It should be noted that various
printers will require DIP switches to be set for use with our drivers. The
ReadMe files in each directory contain details of any DIP switch settings
that should be made.

There are undoubtedly many other printer supported by Acorn drivers even
though they are not specifically mentioned in this document. If you become
aware of any printer not mentioned within this document which can be driven
by Acorn drivers please write with details to the address on the front of
this application note and we will include the printer in the next update to
the list. Acorn are continually updating the number of printer definition
files available.

A number of printers may support two or maybe three different emulations
such as LQ 860 and IBM ProPrinter or BubbleJet and LQ 860. In the list
below we have only documented one of the printer emulation choices.

Not all of the printers listed may have been tested by Acorn, but should
work based on information available from the printer manufacturers.
