Acorn Developer News 21/10/97 Browser / Java / etc Release: Further Elucidation ------------------------------------------------- First of all, many thanks for your fault reports so far; keep 'em coming! Now, a little more explanation regarding what's actually going on in there... It transpires that the installer application in the Internet archive only installs those additional modules which are needed for the browser to operate; other modules vital for actual modem-to-Internet connectivity (such as the PPP module) are not installed by this application (as of yet, anyway). The PPP module, and other useful modules, can be found in the NEWBOOT.BOOT archive. It is recommended that *all* users, regardless of which RISC OS version they are running, replace their existing !Boot with the !Boot (or !ShareBoot, if appropriate) from this part of the hierarchy and *then* run the installer as shipped in the Internet archive. OK, I admit I should have propagated this information at the same time as I released the distribution; in fact, ideally, I'd have built these details into the toplevel ReadMe. Unfortunately I only found out about all of this yesterday when I managed to grab a nice long chat with the software engineers :-} <- "sheepish" smiley... the docs still need to be written! We're also currently investigating the interaction of the new window manager with a number of third-party applications; from the reports you've sent, it appears that at least some of your problems may be down to conflicts between windowmanager 3.96 and assorted other applications. Therefore, if you find system problems when running particular applications, please also try windowmanager 3.91 (as supplied on the Developer CD) and let me know in your fault report whether this makes a difference. If all goes to plan, we'll have better-working versions of things built on Thursday to put on a patch floppy which will ship with the CD.
