This file describes new information for the integrated release of Network
Links supplied with PCPro3.

Network Links details
---------------------
The Network Links user guide (issue 2, July 1996) is significantly out of
date in terms of the installation process. A great deal of that is now done
for you unless you have a very unusual setup. However you may still need to
refer to the user guide (for PC-side setup details, for example). Be aware
that PCPro user guide instructions and these Readme instructions supercede
those in the Network Links user guide, where there are conflicts.

An overview of the process:

**If an older version of Network Links is already installed and working:

1) Your old settings
should be preserved automatically if you chose 'Upgrade from previous
version' in !InstallPC.

Everything should now work as before.

**If you are installing Network Links for the first time
1) If you have a card that supports 'multiple mode' or 'virtual ethernet',
then you should normally turn this on (see the network card supplier's
instructions - you will need to reboot to make any changes take effect)
if you are using RISCOS-side networking too then set it up and get it working
first.

2) Run !PCInstall to install PCPro and Network Links. It will try to
accomodate your existing network settings.

3) Set the packet types you want to use in !PCconfig, Networks. If you have
multiple mode/virtual ethernet enabled then normally you should leave all the
packet types turned on in !PCConfig.
If your card doesn't support multiple mode/virtual ethernet then you can
only select packet types for the PC side that are not used by the RISCOS
side. See Chapter 6 of the Network Links guide for details.

4) Install the PC-side networking.

More details:

For most setups, installation and recognising your Network Card is automatic,
and you just need to select the packet types required as described in section
4.7 of the PCPro user guide. If you are upgrading an existing !PC with
Network Links then you shouldn't need to read any more of this section.

If you have not installed Network Links before then you will need to refer to
the Network Links Manual for details of the PC-side network installation.
This is detailed in chapter 3 (section 3.2), or chapter 4 for DOS & Windows
3.1 TCPIP, chapter 5 for other networks. You should also read the overview
in Chapter 1.

If your ethernet card or its modules are very old and there is no RISC OS
networking set up at all, then you may need to make changes to the
!PC.PCBits.NetLinks.Startup file to get the correct modules loaded. The
Network Links user guide chapter 1 gives the necessary overview, and the
Startup file comments explain and give an example. Note that DCI2 is no
longer supported by Network Links. If you need this then ask Aleph One for
the Network Links 15 release, which is the last one that includes DCI2
support.

For advanced setups (eg Lantastic, DECNET, more than one ethernet card) you
will need to refer to the network links manual. Again, much of it is no
longer relevant; all you will need to do is specify any PCNE2 options
required (which would previously have gone on the end of the RMLOAD PCNE2
line in !NetRun) in the 'Advanced' section of !PCConfig, under 'Network card
emulation', 'Options'. Here you can give -p, -n and -d options to specify
packet types by name or number, and drivers to use. These are detailed in
Chapter 7 of the Network Links user guide.

Note that recent versions of the I-cubed EtherH module (eg 4.32) do not
report their virtual interface as 'virtual', so the automatic picker may
choose eh0, instead of eh1. In this case you should use the advanced options,
described above to specify '-deh1'.
