!NetSpeed is a utility which gives a small window
on the Desktop showing how busy the the network is.

To use it log onto a fileserver and double-click
on the application to run it FROM THE NETWORK.
!NetSpeed monitors the response time of the
fileserver from which it was run so although it
can be installed on your hard disc doing so is a
complete waste of time!

The application will put its icon on the bar. Click
on the icon to open the graph window. Click on the
window's close icon to close it again. Note that
when the window is not open !NetSpeed is completely
inactive, taking no processor time at all.

Clicking Menu on the icon gives a menu of five
items.

Info and Quit are as usual.

Graph leads to a submenu of Speed or Load. Speed
plots a line graph of the response time of the
server in black, with a red line across the
graph showing the average of the last 256
readings. The higher the line the faster the
response, so the line falls as the server gets
busier. Load plots a bar chart similar to !Usage
in which the bars get higher as the server gets
busier. I personally much prefer the Speed graph
but the choice is yours.

Interval leads to a submenu of 1, 2, 5 or 10
seconds. !NetSpeed does its stuff by the simple
expedient of opening and closing a file every
few seconds and seeing how long it takes. Using
this menu you can choose how often it does this.
More often means a closer watch on the server
but causes more traffic itself, keeps the server
busier (though not very busy even on 1 sec), and
slows down the response of other applications on
the Desktop. It's up to you.

Scale leads to a submenu of 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0
seconds. This refers to the vertical scale of the
graph plotted. I.e. choosing 1.0 would result in
the line reaching the bottom of the screen graph
if the server took 1 second (or more) to respond.

I hope you find it useful.
