 -------------------Help for !Filetypes Version 3.07-----------------------

                        --- M.Thompson 30June92 ---

Have you ever found a disk on which certain files were little blank
squares, and you couldn't for the life of you work out what sort of file
they were, or how they were used?

To combat this load up !Filetypes, and drag a file of unknown type to the
icon. If it is recognised then you'll be told a little bit about the
filetype, and the sprite will be loaded if it exists.

This program works best from a Hard disc, but if, like me, you haven't got
one then when dragging a file to the FileTypes icon have this disc in the
drive, as FileTypes will probably want to look up some data.

NB: If the version number of this program has a "U" after it then it has
been altered since I passed it on. In this case I can't guarantee any of
the information accurate, and bug reports referring to specific filetypes
may not make too much sense to me, but I'll have a go.

All the information included is correct to the best of my knowledge. I
apologise for any that is wrong, and will gladly change it if I am informed
of the error. Please keep in mind that I've only got a small space to
include information about the files.

This document is used for 2 purposes. It is the !Help file for !FileTypes
my file identification application, but it also serves in a cut down form as
a list of filetypes which I post to Comp.Sys.Acorn on Janet News every so
often (For Janet News types !FileTypes is available from the NewCastle
info-server).

The list below is an index of the filetypes that are recognised. At the
moment there are 570 of them.

          --------------------------- Notes ------------------------

1. Acorn have recently decided to rearrange the FileType allocations, to cut
the number available for the user on their own, and to increase the number
available for commercial products. The new Acorn regulations for filetypes
are:

   &000-&0FF User's personal area (For non-distributed software)
&100-&3FF For allocation to non-commercial software (eg. FreeWare etc)
&400-&9FF For allocation to software houses.
&A00-&AFF AcornSoft & for allocation to software houses.
&B00-&DFF For allocation to software houses.
   &E00-&FFF Reserved for Acorn use.

The major differences here are that non-commercial software can now have
filetypes allocated to it, and the area for commercial software has
increased dramatically. This does mean that some PD/FreeWare programs will
have filetypes in the wrong place for a while, but I expect this will sort
itself out sooner or later.

2. The Arc was running out of Filetypes for commercial products. This was
the major reason that Acorn had to rearrange the Filetype regulations. To
prevent the same thing being necessary again in the near future Acorn have
decided to make it harder to be allocated a filetype. I now quote from a
posting to Comp.Sys.Acorn by Alan Glover:

"For commercial filetype requests we expect to see a good reason for
allocating a filetype ... that an application does the same as twenty others
but wants to save in its own unique format is not a particularly welcome
reason. The minimum requirement for a valid allocation is that double-
clicking the file loads an application and does something meaningful with
it.
"We must be trying to standardise - use existing file formats (not just
within the Acorn world), and trying to make data exchange as painless as
possible.
"For requests in the &100-&3FF range, the criteria is less stringent
but even so allocating sixteen different types for menu making utilities
does no one any good. They're aren't enough filetypes for re-inventing the
wheel, axle, road...."

Indeed - So no more filetypes for midi, please (there are at least 5
already), and when writing a distributable product try to keep filetypes to
a minimum (Does Archway2 REALLY need to use every type between &400 and
&43B, and then some?), and register them all with Acorn. Oh, and any typos
in that quote are probably mine.

3. If you find any filetypes that I don't list (there must be hundreds of
the little b*gg*rs) then either snail- or e- mail them to me, along with a
brief (less than 30 words) description of what each one is actually for, and
a sprite if you have it (uuencoded if Emailing, please).
FileTypes with a # beside them in the list aren't too well known to me,
any further info on what they actually are for would be greatly appreciated,
(there's a Thank-You reserved for anyone that can give me decent information
on the Archway2 filetypes) as would any extra sprites (again uuencoded if
Emailing, please), suggestions, constructive critisism, or just comments.
Thanks.

4. The format for a data entry is

hex number/Sprite Present?(* means yes, else no)/
   First line of text/
   second line of text/
   third line of text/
   fourth line of text%

You can heve less than 4 lines of text if you want, but you must include
the % sign as the last character (It's a terminator). Any superflous spaces
do tend to cause some nasty errors, so be careful. Each line of text should
be no more than 45 characters long (exluding the terminator). This'll change
for version 3.08 - honest.
And remember - if you change any of the data to add a "U" after the
version number in the first few lines of the basic program.

5. Troubleshooting: If you get the error Bad Hex when running the program
then there are some spaces or extra characters between the "%" at the end of
one data entry, and the hex number at the start of the next. If you find and
delete the offending characters things should be OK from then on.

And now the boring legal bit:

This is a FreeWare program (although later versions might not be). As such
you may pass it to anyone you like as long as you observe the following
conditions.

1: You may not benifit financially from the transaction.

2: You must include all the files I choose to include, and may not
chop it into little bits. You get the whole thing, or nothing.

3: You can add extra filetypes if you really must. If you do, then
add a "U" after the version number in the first few lines of the basic
program, to let subsequent users know that it's not all done and checked by
me. A better way to proceed is to send me a mail message about the filetype,
and if using Janet and sending a sprite please could you UUencode it.

4: You may not remove any credit to me as author.

5: You may not run it on an A5000 on a Tuesday (Only Joking - No one
ever reads these conditions anyway).

6: You can fiddle with the code if you like, but send a copy to me
for evaluation and version number allocation.

        7: That's it

  End of boring legal bit.

Look out for updates which will include things like:

Faster text searches ('Cos the data's organised in a more sensible way).
     Loads more filetypes (Yes, more)
Facilities to input new types (maybe)
     Resizable main window
A separate "page" for each different use for disputed types
     Lots of other spiffy stuff

Thank You-s:

Anyone who's sent me a filetype, some info, a sprite, a bug fix, or fan
mail(!)
Doug, Hugo and Dave for info on some filetypes I hadn't a clue about.
Paul Field for heroically sending me info on some of the Studio 24+
filetypes, which had had me baffled for yonks.
Denis Howe for keeping me busy by compiling a "rival" list with about
8 000 000 new types.
Paul at SJ Research for a few types even Denis missed (Sorry I didn't
Email a reply, but my mailer doesn't like your address).
Joris Roling for his !Help application.
Anybody who's bothered to read this far.

This application is loosely based upon an app of the same name written in
1990 by Douglas Winter, in about the same way that current Ford motor cars
are based upon the Model T, but I have to put this in, or he'll start
whinging.
