                   Help for !FileHelp
                   ==================

Have you ever wanted to have a quick look at a text
file (just to read a line of help), or list an OBEY
file, only to find that the desktop wants you to insert
the disc with !Edit on it, and load the editor in before
you can see the text even though you know damn well that
before the desktop knew about !Edit, it would have listed
the text in a window nice and quickly, and all that fuss
 could be avoided?
Have you ever double-clicked a picture to show a friend
only to find that !Paint has to be loaded, and you
eventually have to resort to either re-setting the system
variable Alias$@RunType_FF9 or *SCREENLOADing the picture
 'by hand'?
Have you ever wanted to write 2 lines of text for an
OBEY file, only to discover you have to load up !Edit to
stop the O.S. from changing <Obey$Dir>s into proper
 directory names?

Well help is at hand at last.
This application allows you to do the standard 'things'
to those files once again, yet still allows the standard
operation of other applications to continue unhindered.
It also includes a "mini editor" for those small text
 and obey files.

With !FileHelp installed, instead of double-clicking a
 file, either:
   (a) Drag the file to the !FileHelp icon on the iconbar,
   (b) Hold down [Alt] as you double-click the file.
   (c) Hold down [Alt] while choosing the 'Help' option
on the "FILER Application 'xxxx' " Menu.

The file will then be acted on as follows:

  SPRITE: SCREENLOADed (Picture displayed)
  TEXT: TYPEd (Text listed)
OBEY: Loaded into the MINI-EDITOR (see below)
  BBC Font: PRINTed (Font installed)
  Directory: FILEINFO * (Contents listed)
  Application: FILEINFO * (Contents listed)
OTHER: DUMP (Hexadecimal dump of file)

The DUMP and TYPE operations are done to a large window,
so more text is visible at once, and text wrapping around
in an ugly manner is less likely to happen than with the
 standard desktop 'little-tiny-window-in-the-middle-of-the-
 screen' display window.

NOTE: Holding down Alt whilst double-clicking is more
convenient than dragging files around, but
BE WARNED: Other applications (e.g. Paint, Edit)
MAY notice the double-click BEFORE !FileHelp can
intervene, and thus the editor will load the file
instead. (But this shouldn't matter, as it can
only happen when the editor is installed anyway,
so there is no bother with having to load an
       editor specially.)
GENERALLY, if !FileHelp was run BEFORE an editor,
then ALT-double click will work fine.

                The !FileHelp Mini-Editor
                =========================

This is the second useful area of File Help: It contains
a (small, simple) text editor for Obey files. If you drag
(or double-click holding ALT) an OBEY file, it will be
loaded into the mini-editor. (A file (ANY file) can also be
loaded into the editor by dragging it into the editor
 window)

NOTE: As only tiny amounts of text are involved, Mini-
Editor will automatically overwrite the current text with
 loaded text.
*** You will not be warned or asked for confirmation. ***

The editor (at this stage) only allows you to edit 10
lines of text, but this should be plenty for normal use.

To edit, use the cursor keys/mouse to position the caret
(exactly as in !Edit), and use the following 'special'
 keypresses:

DELETE: Delete the character left of the caret
COPY: Delete the character right of the caret
CTRL-: Move caret to start of line
CTRL-: Move caret to end of line

RETURN: This inserts a line BELOW the line the
caret is presently on. NOTE: This will
                DESTROY line 10.
INSERT: (Above DELETE) This inserts a line ABOVE
the one the caret is on. (NOTE: destroys
                line 10)
CTRL-U: Wipe all text on that line.
CTRL-D: DELETE the entire line. This moves the
lines below UP to fill the space made.
                (Line 10 will become blank)

Also, the ENTIRE text file can be deleted with the
'Clear' option on the editor menu.

The editor window can be removed without losing the
 text:
Clicking the window's close box will remove it, and it
can be brought back on-screen by clicking Select on the
!FileHelp icon on the Desktop icon bar. (This will also
bring up the window when !FileHelp has just been run- It
starts with a default Obey file which helps speed the
creation of fairly standard !Run files.
The editor is also extremely useful for looking at the
first few bytes of a file: I find it invaluable in quickly
and easily finding the version number of a basic program
or module, as most of these programs have a version number
at the beginning (Just drag the file into the editor
window to view the first few bytes of it).
